DIY 6 pack of 6' "structure Weeds" for $18.51
« on: Dec 30, 2009, 09:11 AM »
Made these a couple weeks ago.  So far they have been pretty durable and seem to work to bring panfish in.

Parts List (All were purchased from Mill's Fleet Farm)
2 Packs Holiday Trims Plush Garland (18' long) ($2.30 ea.)
6 Bayco Kord Manager ($0.95 ea.)
1 spool Woodstock 40# nylon tip-up line ($2.54)
3 bags (6 total) Water Gremlin Dipsey Sinkers ($1.89 ea.)

1. Cut the garland into six 6' sections
2. Use tip-up line or other heavy mono to secure a sinker to the end of each strand of garland
3. Attach whatever length of cord you want to the other end of the garland, the ones sold in stores are anywhere from 20 - 40 ft of cord, obviously if you go longer, you may need more tip-up line.
4. Wrap up each "weed" on individual Kord Managers, securing the end of the line to the Kord Manager. This will allow you to wind up to the desired depth and the cord manager is wide enough to sit over the hole.

That is an awesome idea.  I paid over $60 for a 4 pack or the reelweeds.  They do work if you give them about 1/2 hour.  I was thinking about getting more.  Thanks for this post, you just saved me over $50.  I appreciate it very much!!

I made some almost exactly the same 2 years ago. I got the garland for free from Menards since they were tossing it in the trash. I ended up doubling up the garland to make it thicker and then using zip-ties to secure it every 2ft on the tip-up line. I used tip-ups instead of the cord wrap, until they froze into the ice. Now i have the line attached to closed cell foam. It is easy to get out of the ice if it freezes in and it also floats if I happen to kick it into the hole.
I set up 8 of them around the shanty and fish in the middle. They have worked great so far.

instead of going to menards to get the garland, go to walmart, i got 100' of the same thing for less than 5$.     had the weights from an old throw net that got ripped, and an old spool of 50# mono.................. made enough "weeds" that i have about a dozen of them.   all for 5$         LOL

but after seeing the cord wraps, i think i might have to buy a few of them..........

just bought 3 75' rolls for under 1$ each. Also bought the 3 reels. Have large sinkers. Plan to make them up. This will be my first piece of ice fishing equipment. Haven't been on the ice before.
*** most important question ***
How do you use them? Due to earlier posts, I am assuming you drill holes around were you are fishing and drop them in to create structure to hold fish in that area. Or, do you actually tie hooks on them? Just want to make sure.... I guess my next piece needs to be an auger :)
Thanks,
Ice fishing with my two boys reminds me of being a kid, when you got no place to go in the winter.... go play on the ice.

yeah, id say the first thing ya gonna need to buy is the auger       LOL
without that, ya wont be able to put your new weeds in place     LOL

best way ive found so far is to circle your area with the weeds and fish in the middle of the circle.
one thing to watch for is tangling with your line if ya happen to get a whopper.

LOL!  No hooks and a circle, semi circle or V around your fishing location.

Great job!  My cousin did the same thing after I spent way too much money buying the stuff.  Intead of garland, however, he bought some long fake decorative plants from Walmart.  I think being "leafy" would help.

I used coke bottle for float but a pool noodle might be better if freeze up occurs. The pet stores have some real authentic looking pond weeds on sale in my area now. I used summer garland. Leafy and silk.

Great ideas ! I was wondering if Fake wood structure would draw in more or less fish? maybe it doesn't matter? I have large tall fake wood structure (2' high), from an old fish tank and didn't know if anyone has tried it before?
