Coleman sportcat heater ?
« on: Jan 26, 2005, 04:01 PM »
I just bought a Coleman Sportcat heater to take the chill out of my 1 man shanty. I am playing with it in the house and the smell when it burns is bad. Is this thing safe in a one man shanty or will I get high from the fumes? I have very few brain cells left and I am trying to conserve them.

To check if your gonna die from it, put it in the shanty outside your house overnight, or for as long as you ever would fish, +2 hours. Walk in there with a CO meter and leave in for 10 to 20 minutes. if it dosent beep, your good on CO fumes. As for the propane stink, let the heater burn out a tank one day. Maybe the stink was from leaving the heater on the tank one day without it running. worst comes to worse return it and get a mr. buddy
(oops, better check the other post on this thread before you do that ;D)

I've had a sportcat for about 2 years now.  Works ok in my single man fish trap if it is not real cold.  I'm thinking about trading up, but haven't decide on what.  As far as a smell, you might get a little odor when you first light her up, but not enough of a stink to be unbearable or run you out of the shack.  I would suggest running a small cannister of propane through her to break it in and then see what you think. Good luck!

You should be ok if you pay attention to the signs of CO problems. Headache, dizziness, etc. It says what to watch for in the instructions. If I remember correct that is a catalytic heater and does not putoff much CO.

outdoors13 has some good suggestions on testing the CO levels. Give that a try.

I moved to a buddy two weeks after trying the sportcat.
