Good line to use on tip-ups
« on: Jan 10, 2011, 07:36 AM »
Still green to ice fishing but loving every second. Bought some traps 2 seasons ago used from a guy. I want to put new line on them. What would be a good line to use? Like type. OR should different traps be setup with different types for different fish? Thanks y'all

Personally I think that woodstock green 50 pound braid is the best.  For walleye put a flauro leader, and for northerns put a steel leader.

Good fishin!!  Nugent 2012!

Here's what I bought this year:

I'll be able to see if a fish is running with the line easier, I'll be able to see it on the ice easier, and since the color alternates every two feet, I can count how many "Stripes" are out for my depth setting.

I don't have to worry about it rotting, superbraids are good for years.

Hope this helps,

Wiener

How does the woodstock hold up after a few years ???? I tried it 15 yrs ago and it would kink up all the time...The best I've used is no longer being made and that was ice fishermen tilt line ...

I agree with Dacron. Goodwins has Braided Dacron by Western Filament in bulk for a very reasonable price. I just bought a 1000' of 50lb black and re-spooled all my Tip Ups. Hope this helps. Jim

Me too. Tie to a swivel and leader about 5' long. I use flourocarbon leaders, might not help, but it doesn't hurt.

big fat heavy line so you can see it on the ice and feel it in your hands. black, red, green, orange, yellow, etc. 30-40#.  leader material of whatever is proper for the fish you are after.  dacron is good, so is flyline backing.     be careful using small diameter superbraid line like spiderwire.  as long as you remember it'll cut you like a razor if the fish runs and you are holding on too tight.

I like the spectra dacron line, its white with green specs in it.  Easy to see and doesnt seem to freeze or tangle as bad.  Hate the solid black line that comes on some HT tipups ive seen. Knots up often.

I use a braided waxed line 36# and tie swivel and leader etc to that.

Doesnt the thin line cut into your hands when you pull in anything heavy?

Don't be tempting us Surf. We'd be showing up with a case of cream soda and sleeping bags.

I went to Bass Pro Shops a few years ago and found a HUGE spool of dacron trolling line that is actually made for off shore trolling.  It was on clearance........55 lb test dacron in red whit and blue fleck.  I forget what I paid for it.......maybe $40 but it was a 1200 yard spool and I did all of my haritage lakers with it and still have some left over.  It is good stuff for ice fishing......does not kink.....abbrasion resistant and has not deteriorated after 4 seasons now!  You guys may wnat to check out the off shore sections of the tackle shops for your dacron line!
