Reasons not to get a Nils power auger???
« on: Nov 16, 2011, 05:03 PM »
Does anyone have any negative expeiences with the nils power augers? I see they are called nils usa now i assume still the same quality of equiptment? Same motor as older models etc?? I am about to purchase a power auger and i think i have settled on this one and just wanted to check one last time to see if there were any negatives i should be considering.... I know they are a little pricey but i am ok spending alittle extra to get the best equiptment if it will last and be worth the extra money...

I had also wondered how this could compete with other options like the Strikemaster that goes up to 3HP motor when the nils only has a 1.35HP but people seem to say the nills is faster?

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't think you can go wrong with either the Nils or the Strikemaster. IMO the two best options on the market for power augers. BUt I'm sure there's plenty of jiffy and eskimo guys that would argue that. Nils makes a great auger and I'm sure you will love it and if taken care of and maintained properly it will last a long time  ;D

What he said, a fantastic Auger, wouldn't use anything else.

All reservations you may have will go way as soon as you drill that first hole with the Nils.... I have used them all and the Nils is in a class of it's own... Break it in properly and it will serve you the rest of your life and then some....

Break in: 50:1 AmsOil Saber Pro first gal, start motor without the bit on and let run, go out every 10-15 minutes and rev it while cycleing the choke, do this for about 1 tank of gas, then use it like you stole it after that......

Only downside is dirty ice, it will dull the head fast, other downside is, everyone will want to try it or ask you to drill for them.... Buy a spare head just in case so you can stay on the ice while the other gets resharpened, a $20 charge + shipping.. Should only have to resharpen every 5=7 years if not abused....

The only negative I have found is that once the blade dulls it is REALLY dull. There are a couple of guys who do a great job sharpening, but if you buy a Nils get a spare blade so you don't have down time waiting for the blade to be sharpened. Some guys go several years without needing sharpening, I needed it in a month. Get the blade with the powerpoint for use with the Tanaka engine, it seems to stabilize the drill when you start the hole. I have had a couple of other name brand drills, all bought NIB, nothing else comes close speed wise and a 20 pound auger is great when you get old and fat. ;)

Another thing to remember with a Nils, DO NOT PUSH DOWN let the auger do the work, just hang on...

Don't overlook fitting a Tanaka power head to a standard lazer hand auger blade. Way cheaper, light as hell, and cuts like crazy.

$500 for the Tanaka motor, $20 at least for adapter and $70 for the Lazer auger or the whole nils set up for $580ish....My buddy has a Nils bit on his Stikemaster 4 stroke, still not a challenge to the Tanaka... Just for giggles my buddy bet me he could drill 3 holes by hand befor me by hand, his 5: lazr against my 8" Nils, He still owes me for that one, wasn't even close....

It looks like the redrock store has more optoins too  - which I like but now i have to decide...

1)42 or 48 inch
2) power point or no power point?

Any opinions.. I am only 5'7'' and i mostly fish in places where there is well under 24 inches of ice so i guess 42 is the way to go.. I love the idea of being able to convert the unit to a hand auger but i assume that doesnt work well with the power point? or does it?  I already have a hand auger so it is not a big deal but would be nice to have the optoin to use this either way.. how much does the power point help when using it with the power head?
