warm toes and hands in the coldest weather
« on: Feb 05, 2007, 01:28 PM »
The secret to keeping the outer extremities warm is to maintain/boost your body's core temp.   When your core starts to get cold the body shuts off circulation to the extremities to keep vital organs warm.  Basic stuff, right??  Well have the missus sew a few pockets into one of your bottom layers and put those chemical warmers in those pockets.  I have a shirt with pockets sewn on the back of my neck, under the arms and at the base of my back...I'm telling ya, this works slick.

I saw a show 'survivor man' or something similar on Discover Times.  He had on a heated vest with no gloves on and they dropped the temp to 0*F.  His hands did not get cold and he maintained dexterity in his fingers, they shut the vest off and almost immediately his fingers got cold and he lost his dexterity.

Give it a shot, works for me.

good advice.  I fished over the past 4 days in some EXTREME conditions,  Yet was still able to walk around hole to hole glove free.  Core temp is extremely important, with head and feet at the top of the list.  Great idea for the pockets.  I will also take a cheapy hand warmer and put it inside my boot liner just above my toes.  dry and toasty all day.

I just duct tape them all over the kids T-shirts before they bundle up.  I also put one in each glove and boot.
Follow the bubbles...

This is a great idea. If I can't get the better half to sew,  I might have to learn (NOT GONNA HAPPEN).  :roflmao: :roflmao: :icefish:

I buy then chemical hand warmers by the case every year or two. I keep them everywhere in the hut in my ice fishin bag, in the truck, car, on the quad and snowmachine. It makes a cold day ice fishing way better for the kids too.

These little things could save your life.

Imagine that your hands are so cold you cant light a match. :(

Like Rick i use the hand warmers some times. I have Much Boots with Carhartt overalls (insulated) and my brothers US Army winter coat with my rabbit hat and Ice Armor X gloves or my Nordic Gear battery heated gloves.

what seems to be the best blend for sock liners?

The WORST day of fishing is ALWAYS better than the BEST day in the office.

Polypropylene.

"Polypropylene is not a dyed fabric. The color is built into the fabric so you won't have any bleeding or fading. Polypro keeps feet warm and dry. Polypropylene is a synthetic fabric that does not absorb any water making it hydrophobic. The fabric speads water evenly across the feet allowing the fabric to dry quickly."

It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

Also reduces hot spots on your feet to help with blisters, polypro is a must have base layer
Tight lines and happy hunting to all! Go Vikings!!
