Portable Shanty Modifications
« on: Oct 13, 2011, 12:52 PM »
Figured I would start up the chatter.  Took out my portable shanty (suitcase style) and am trying to think of modifications I could do to fix the things I had a hard time with last year.

Mods I've done: Add key chains to the zippers for easier opening/closing with gloves, longer pull rope so I'm not pulling up as much, attached skis to the bottom of the suitcase.

Anyone else got ideas?

I have a Large suitcase with my Clam Sleeper, it weights 190 lbs empty, so I made a sled to carry it. I can throw all my gear inside and away we go. It works Great for me.

I have a Clam 5600 and the main thing I'm going to do with it this year is to put some ski wax on the frame that slides.

I have the Clam 5600 as well.  Putting some wax on the frame is a great idea.  Nothing worse than fussing with that on a sub-zero night...

Has anyone ever tried putting the outer shell on their portable shanty in a washing machine?  Mine has some dirt and junk on it, and was wondering the best way to clean it...

Just use one of those small portable steamers... They have a soft brush and attachments..  Steam the dirt right off it. than just hose it down good.. ;)

I'm going to spray my outer shell with waterproofing. in a heavy rain it will leak.

Anyone have any ideas on how to anchor down their portable?  It always seems to be a task...

How about tent stakes?  I've heard guys using them, but if wind is that high, i'm not ususally on the ice...

I went on Ebay and bought some ice climbing anchors. They work slick and are real easy to put into the ice.

A Good Strong inexpensive way to anchor your portable are the Eskimo Screw in anchors ! For 4 bucks, they give you the piece of mind that it will stay where you put it and prevent a chase down the lake and it allows you to fish even on the windiest days ! KTP, Cabelas and FISH 307, right here on the shanty have them in stock !

Thanks, I took apart 2 toboggans to make them, because a toboggan only has 7 boards and I wanted 4 boards per side, so it was just as easy to tear them all apart and start over.
