Tip-up line color
« on: Sep 03, 2011, 01:10 PM »
Was wondering if anyone out there besides me has this crazy superstition about tip-up line color.  i've only used black for years, but i came across the clearance deal on Fish USA, 1000 yards for $30 sumthing, only problem is it's tan.  I'm heavily debating it and was wondering if anyone else has used tan line successfully or am i just crazy?

I've run the gamut of different colored line over the years and for me, it was the length of the leader on the end of the tip up line that made the difference for me ! Heck no, your not Crazy ! Crazy is somebody that buys 2500 yard bulk spools of tip up line so he doesn't have to tie knots in the line on his 500 yard tip up spools, Now that's Crazy !!  :cookoo:  :roflmao:

well thats good to know. i never thought about the leader length really effecting it that much.  also, in case anyone was trying to look at the same deal i did, i put the wrong site, it's fish307....sorry about that.  think i am going to get it. i mean what the worst that can happen? i catch a few less fish?  atleast i will be out of the house and can stop the wifes nagging for a while, and wont have to buy tip-up line ever again and can spool up a few friends while im at it.

i actually hate dark lines because you cant easily see if your lines of to the side or moving around the hole i used light brown, tan or any light colored line and have got just as much fish as i did running black and dark green. i use a 6ft. floro. leader also.

I have white on mine and its coming off this year, impossible to see in the snow. Dont think color matters to the fish, they are looking at your bait not the main line. Just get a color you will be able to see on the snow/ice, tan should work.

Not crazy at all and i think all colors are fine ( you are crazy if you think its the last tip-up you spool though cause thats part of an ice addict ). I put different colors on certain tip-ups because they are the ones ill bring for certain species and even certain bodies of water if you own alot of them. I agree with BBK on snow visability especially if the fish was a runner.

I have always used black line and home made leaders. My leader length's are from 8 to 24 inches depending on what I am fishing for.  I like black line so i can see it on the ice or snow . I don't need to see it in the hole i can always feel which way it is going and that is always down.

How do you get the power pro to not freeze on cold days? I put some 10lb power pro on one of my tip-ups for crappie, it worked great.. they could pull it great compared to tip-up line, and caught a few fish.. but if it was below 32 out the line instantly froze all over the top of the ice.
