Tip-up Question
« on: Feb 28, 2011, 01:36 PM »
Thinking about buying a couple of tip-ups have never used any before. I have always used rod/reel setup.
My question do you guys still use a bobber under the tip-up or what do you do to mark and hold the depth of your bait.

I just tie a small loop in my line. Its quick and simple, and doesn't require extra pieces to get lost or fumble around with in the cold..

Just make sure you untie them after every time you fish. Or else you'll end up with a bunch of knots and won't know which one is your current mark.

I have tied a few bobber stops onto my line for when I want to mark the depth.  They're just something like a snell knot on a plastic tube that you slip on the line, slip the plastic tube out and cinch down.  they're really cheap too.

However, most of the time I don't even use em.  If I'm fishing deep I sound the hole and pull up to where I want and set the trap as is....no trouble in re-setting the same way, and usually I'll pull it up a tad as time goes by if I don't get anything.

I tried the buttons for a season and was not happy with them... I think part of the problem is that if I don't get a flag in 30-45 min. I move the tilt. One hole I might be fishing 5 ft. of water the next 40 ft, moving the button back and forth was to time consuming. I use bobber stopper when open water fishing, but I think I will have the same problem as buttons. Tried the rubber band and it works, but kept leaving bits of rubber band around.   Last year I tried the small bobber and liked the "clip" part, but not the "float" part... I was using a over hand loop that I can just pull out, not ideal, but for me better than the button. This year I started using “Clip Hooks”, I picked up from Radio Shack. The spring and the hook are much like a bobber, but I find them much easier to use, they have only slight positive buoyancy (I can get it back if dropped in a hole) and with the addition of some glow tape easy to see. I have been very happy with them and will be using them for the foreseeable future…
