Locking your shack
« on: Feb 15, 2011, 10:05 PM »
I was wondering how many people lock their shacks when they are gone.  I heard lots of people don't lock them up and some even leave their gear inside while others leave it empty, so if people open the door there is nothing but the shell.  I thought for sure everyone would lock up their shacks but some people trust others.  I know at Blackstrap there have been lots of breakins and damage.

I personally lock mine. When I ws putting my shack out this year was talking to a fellow fisherman that I know who also has his shack on the same lake. He was telling me that if I ever realized that I forgot something when I goy out there that his and alot of the other ones are not locked. He said that its a tight group of friends out there.. Still lock mine though.

I have a small shack and used to leave it unlocked when I was leaving it on Blackstrap (I have a portable now so I haven't left it in the last couple of years).  I figured if someone really wanted to get into my shack they could cut the lock or force their way in through the door so I thought by maybe leaving it unlocked without anything worth stealing (I usually left a synopsis on the floor, go figure?) it'd be fine and from what I could tell no one messed with my shack or left garbage etc. etc.

blackstrap is around the MooseJaw area so break ins are not unusual. We lock our shack and take everything out. Found it a few times opened and looked into.

Buffalo is "around" moose jaw. Blackstrap is fairly close to saskatoon.  My shack is on buffalo and unlocked most of the time. After a long day on the lake and planning on coming back first thing the next day ill leave hear out and lock up.

I would assume by you quote. You obviously don't work in law enforcement. I do, and would never trust the younger generation of Moose Jaw folks. Older ones, yes. Younger, NO!!

thank the lord almighty i don't have anything to do with law enforcement...

i was just basing my opinion on casual observation from the odd time i get down to MJ.  seems like a stand up town from what i could tell.  but this is topic high-jacking at it's finest...

it's a shame that there is this issue with shacks and is the reason why i don't think i'd ever bother with a permanent.  well, that and the slush  ::)

has something changed since i went to siast in moose jaw 5+ years ago? i lived in regina til i was 18 and everyone locked everything, then in moose jaw i got made fun of for locking my car doors, all the locals would say 'you don't need to lock your doors in moose jaw'

Too many bored cops in moose jaw just looking to pull people over, got pulled over twice in one night a few years ago for absolutely no reason.

I live in moose jaw, for the last ten years or so. I grew up in regina. I had my stove stolen out of my shack IN TOWN, right outside my house. It wasn't locked. I learned my lesson. No matter where your shack is, lock it, stoves are a hot commodoty.
Still counting.....

ive heard of guys in shanty towns putting trail cams to watch out for eachother.   i feel this is a good idea if they can conceal them.
