Cheyenne River in Pennington county
« on: Feb 13, 2011, 06:46 PM »
Has/does anyone fish on the Cheyenne River?  Looks like it runs from Wasta to Hot Springs, according to the SD GF&P it says there is Walleyes in there!  I'd like to get after some next weekend if I can get my auger work'n right.  Do ya'll know of any access points or boat launches where you can get on the river?

You had better check some facts before you head out there.  I fish it in the summer never have seen a walleye in there just chanel cats and it is a very small fast flowing river that most of the year could barelly float a canoe.  I cross it on a bridge every day and at wasta it is open uless its 30 below. So be safe!

That sucks, thanks for the tip though!  Guess I'll just have to drive down to Angostura to try an get some walleyes on the ice.

I heard there was some perch biting at New Underwood Lake??  The G,F&P also claims there is Walleye in New Wall Lake?  Does anyone know anything about either of these lakes?

I have fished new Wall a bunch in years past and never seen a walleye come out, not for lack of trying. Always had good luck catching just about everything else in the lake. Talked to a local here Sat during all the down time at the tourney who fishes that lake a bit over the last 30 years and he has seen walleye come out of it, but not w whole lot or very often. Orman or possibly Newell might be your best bets... Newell or New Wall will probly have the best ice, i'd guess

Not enough ice or time... not necessarily in that order.

Curlew north on New Underwood (were I live) has walleye some nice ones too there hard to find and that lake is never good after a good thaw such as this.  To much run off makes it as muddy as choclate milk. New underwood dam has been restocked since the winter kill and has a few 7" gills and 10" bass ive also caught some 6" crappies this winter.  used to have some nice gills and crappie before it winter killed.

Dang, thats not what I wanted to hear!  Looks like any fishing this weekend will have to be in the hills some where.
