First time icer.
« on: Feb 14, 2011, 07:18 PM »
This year is my buddy and my first time on the ice. We have been out 2 times and have managed a 22 in and a 19 in laker. Needless to say we are hooked. While out we have not had a single flag. Both fish were caught jigging. We are setting up in multiple depths with 3-5 inch minnnows with no luck. Is there something we are missing or is this typical?

Where are you fishing? If the lake has smelt you better learn how to catch them if you want to catch Lakers on tip ups.

We have been fishing Caspian but were thinking of Seymour this weekend. That is actually what I have heard. Any particular way to catch smelt? Bait or Jigs?

Use the smallest bibit you can find and tip with maggot, ask around where guys are getting smelt.  The beach near the boat launch is good at times if you are fishing Caspian.

Yes Caspian is in Greensboro. Jigging has been good there. What size smelt should we be using?

Big bait big fish.  Whatever you can catch for smelt are better than the best shiner.

All the NEK lakes are noted for being very good first thing in the morning. I recommend setting up
in the dark and fishing till noon. Its over by noon most days with exceptions for first couple weeks
of the season and new/full moon periods..

If I fish for them on a Friday would I be able to hold on to them to fish with until Saturday?

gotta leave them on the ice. use a decent cooler and you should be set if you can keep them out of the wind! leave them in our shanty. we get half as a users fee! haha

Eat what you don't use as bait... tasty little fishies

Hali jigs work well for smelt, add a real maggot or gulp maggots. Cut up smelt in small pieces work the best. smelt fishermen at the Seymour boat launch will answer questions also. Good Luck !

If you dont have any luck catching smelt big shiners will work on the bottom too but smelt are the way to go if you can.

How are you rigging your tip ups. After a barrel swivel and a mono leader are you putting weight close to the bait to keep the bait down toward the bottom? I've been weighting  the line about 7  feet above the hook.

I dont like any weight near my hooks, so I will put it in the upper third of my leader.

I drop my smelt down about 5 feet from the trap and a sinker about a foot up from the smelt. Works well for me!
