Nice gills net. This is my 15th year ice fishing Deep Creek and so far, Deep Creek blue gills are a mistical creature to me. Kinda like big foot. You hear of the tales that they do exist, but you have never seen one. I rank a 12 inch blue gill from Deep Creek right along with a 30 inch walleye and a 42 inch pike. I have yet to find either but have high hopes.
Ice fishing is no catch and release sport.

Nice Gills Boyd! I love fishing for those Gills at DC. Hopefully we'll be down before too long to get after them. The gill in my animated GIF below is from DC.

Great 'gills, wish we had them that size in CT. Are those Fiska tungsten jigs you're using? I got some a few years ago, by far the best teardrop type jig out there. Tight lines!

dts,

Yea, Fiskas, a Fat Boy glow orange and a white verticle jig kinda like a small Genz worm.  This is early and I was fishing tandem.  They seem to have shyed away from that presentation.  Now, Gill Pills, gold with white bead and glow are hot.  You ever fish tandem?

Boyd, still finding the gills down your way? Me and my son fished Sat. almost stopped over but we got there early and I thought you would still be sleeping.

Getthenet - I will often fish tandem with a smaller jig higher up, something like an ice fly or a very light ant. It's a good way to cover more of the water column. If you don't have a flasher (which I don't) it gives you a good idea of whether the fish are higher or lower, depending on which jig is consistently outfishing the other. Tight lines.

CT has huge gills..not sure why you can't find them.  I grew up on a lake in CT that was full of huge panfish

Treeguy - I used to score on big gills in Candlewood before they began the annual winter drawdown (shows how old I am!) but it seems they aren't around anymore. I have had good luck in some golf course ponds but I wonder about all the chemicals going into the water at a golfcourse. Care to share any hotspots? I'm in the NW corner. Tight lines.

Send a note to the DEP fisheries biologists asking about ponds or lakes near you that have large panfish, they should be able to help.  I grew up in Guilford so i cant talk much about your area up there, other then the trout fishing you got ;D

I grew up on a lake that was full of big panfish but it is private access only.
