Granby Lakers
« on: Jan 09, 2011, 07:58 AM »
Anthony and I headed into the hills @ 4 am Saturday hoping for some monster Lakers, we ended up getting good action most of the day with Anthony beating me out 18 - 17. Found them in 45 FOW, used tube jigs tipped with sucker meat. Ice is 6" with snow and slush. Never found the big one's but it was a excellent day

Great fishing with you Anthony, we'll have to do it again!!!
Mental note 4 wheeler's aren't made for snowmobile trails hahhahahahahahahahha

My brother lives and fishes in Granby. I've been waiting on the call to come up when the ice got good enough. I guess it's good enough! See yall up there!

Way to get into em John.
Didn't you tell me that south parking lot is a bleeping nightmare for parking with a trailer?
We are thinking about hitting Granby this weekend & aren't sure where we want to park yet.

I do remember telling you that, guess I should take my own advice lol. I heard the ice was thinner out over deep water and didn't want to chance it. The trail we took down was great at 6 am when we headed out but all the snowmobile's had it all tore up by 4 pm when we headed back. You should be fine with the tracks though   ;)

Yeah those old stock tires on the quads just don't get it done sometimes!
I used to run chains on mine until I lucked into the track system.
I have a sweet snowmobile now too @).
Are you gonna be up at Wolford on Saturday the 22nd by chance? The "guys" fishing trip is scheduled for that weekend and we'll be staying at the Allington Inn again. Granby, Wolford and Willy's/GM is on the agenda.

Just might talk the wife into that  ;) Would be cool to fish with you. I heard there was 5" on wolford the 9th so it should be good. Chains don't help in deep snow, darn thing just gets high centered, guess I'll keep my eye's open for a sled  ;) ;)

Thanks Wyowind, we always have fun when fishing.

Yeah the Wolford Campgroud sent my buddy an email on Jan 4th stating that there was 5" everywhere and that he was shooting for the 14th to open the gate if it is 12" or thicker for saftey reasons. Hopefully wolford fishes better than she did last year. We could not find the bigger fish like we usually do. It was sorta cool fishing all the different locals though looking for them.

I'll keep an eye out for ya. We have a couple newbies coming out so it should be pretty funny.
You will have to make an effort to come down to the breakfast room on Saturday night for some poker. I cant believe they didnt throw us out of the Hotel last year cuz it got a little rowdy! :o

Question. I'm going to be in Colorado next week and was thinking about bringing my gear along. I've never fish anywhere but love chasing lake trout. Are there any regulations on Granby that I should know about. Does and ATV have to be registered. I know no live bait and such. I have read the fishing regs. Any info would be helpful.
I will be catch and release, with hopeful a picture.
Thanks Appley

Good question.  I'm not sure.  There are a lot of regulations just for Granby.  You can probably find it online - I think it's called the Arapaho National Recreation Area - or something similar.  If you google that you'll probably find the regs pretty quickly.

About all I can offer.

4 wheelers can only access the lake via boat ramps, $5 a day to buy a daily pass which you need a card for, no live bait, cut suckers work best for us.

The ice does seem safe just about every where now.

Welcome to our home :) The ice is actually come a long way in the last week (40 below will do that)
Catch and release is much appreciated especially if you get into some of the enormous fish that make their home in that lake.  However the kokanee population is falling off and the DOW has lifted the slot on Lake Granby.  My understanding is that we need to thin the wolf pack a bit so that the koks will come back strong and in turn will continue to feed and bolster the Laker pop.  Taking some of the younger more veracious feeders is supposed to be good for the lake (and they are very tasty).

Good luck and happy hunting.
