New hand auger
« on: Feb 16, 2011, 08:04 AM »
Lookin for a new hand auger...was thinking about a nils, but most places are sold out, And I really don't want to order on line. Trying to research this is almost as bad as picking out new boots  ::) (which I just did)  Need this by Saturday , so I will have to get one from a local shop. The only ones I have any experience with is my old Mora. On that one I used the cordless drill attachment...had it for years....Now it rests on the bottom of a local lake..But that's another story :%$#!:     Any and all suggestions for a new hand auger that most sporting goods stores carry would be appreciated

Going through the samething I want a nils can not find one on line anywhere.
If you can find one second to the nils NorMark Fin-Bore III Pro Hand Augers then Eskimo 6 Inch Barracuda Turbo Blade 2 pc: come recommended.

Fish307 has a decent supply of Normark Finbore III augers yet. I have two Finbore III augers and they cut superb.

I'm just starting with this, so my opinion might be worthless, but I have a 6" Strikemaster Lazer 2 piece hand auger that I like.

People on the lake have actually come over and ask me how it plunges through the ice so fast.  I don't know, all I know is that it's a breeze to do anything less than a foot of ice, and maybe 30-40 seconds of work for 1.5-2 feet.

Same sized Nils will do it in less than half the time and half the effort, an 8" will even do it faster and easier...

If you get an eskimo make sure it's a barracuda.  The barracuda uses lazer blades and is much better than their basic model.  Me and my bro in-law bought a 6 inch like 5 yrs ago.  he's still using it with lazer blades and it's ok.  I bought myself a lazer and it is  better than the cuda but a more coin.  Yes they do come with a blade cover.  Next year I will have a nills.

The auger worked fine...seemed better (faster) than the old Mora
