Bow fishing-spearing?
« on: Jan 21, 2011, 09:48 AM »
I hope this is not too stupid. ( thank goodness for annonimity). I would like to try spearing, but as of yet, do not want to drop $ for spear, also, cannot weld so rules making one out of the pic. So, can you shoot them with a bow? I live in Mich. and have read rules, cannot find anything that says no. I have been told by others, that I will really enjoy this sport & would like to try it out with equipment I have. Thanks

I am not sure of the rules on that but sound pretty cool. U can pick up a spear at Dunhams for about 20 bucks to get u started. Another option is ur local high school shop class might do it for u. I had one built at a shop class all they wanted is for me to pay for the material just a thought
Never a bad time to be fishing;)

Blackhawk is right.  I live in Michigan as well, and you cannot shoot a pike with a bow.  In the old reg. book, there was no mention of it, and I often thought it would be a hoot to give it a try.  I shoot carp and such during the summer and it can be a blast.  But in the new regulation book, pg. 12 gives you a table that shows what is open for bow fishing during the winter months, and pike are not listed.

I've tried spearing with a bow and I must say it is extremely difficult.  With the refraction of the water you can only shoot if the fish is on the other side of the hole.  You basically have to aim for your foot to compensate for the refraction.  It took us awhile just to hit a 10" herring.  I think with a little more practice I could maybe be successful.  One of these days I will get over my laker addiction and get back into the darkhouse.
I was born an Alaskan I just didn't live here at the time.
