Increase your hook up ratio w/tip ups...
« on: Jan 20, 2011, 06:47 AM »
Just thought I'd share my tip to increase your hook up ratio using tip ups.  Mainly using them for pike here.  I run dacron line to a small barrel swivel and then use 4 feet of 30# fireline.  Run the fireline THROUGH the eye of your first treble hook and then tie on a smaller treble hook.  Hook the bait behind the dorsal with the first treble, then stick the bait just under the chin with the barbs facing to the rear.  Most predator fish strike head first, and I've seen numerous times where they are swimming around holding the bait by the head, and the rear treble is not in the mouth.  I've been using this set up with excellent results for many years, just thought I'd share for those that haven't heard of it.

Sit in the house- or sit in the shanty, let's see, beer and crappies- I'm going fishing.

Check your local regulations first though. 6 hook points may not be legal.
Good idea and drawing though, great tip for those that can use it.
Two single hooks would work well also it would seem.

In my area the two trebles is not legal. So the quickstrikes I buy have a treble and single hook. I use the same method but the single hook goes in the mouth

I think that you will find that in Ontario a treble counts only as one hook, you are permitted 4 hooks which means they ALL could be trebles. Giving you 12 points  but only 4 hooks!

I do mine a little differant,I found some treble hooks that have 1 small hook and 2 larger,I stick the short hook between the eyes with the 2 bigger hooks sticking up and the other regular treble behind the dorsal fin. I dont know the name of those hooks but you can get them from one of the hook companys out there

And pray all twelve points don't sink in ;D  I think 2 points are a pain to get out without killing the fish, I'd have to have a operating table and nurse assistant to get all twelve out.

Same here...Only one treble, but I will have to try it like that. Should the treble go in the mouth or the single hook go into the mouth?
No, I mean I REALLY REALLY LOVE TO FISH!!!

Some people, especially on LakeSimcoe ,remove the single hooks on bottom spreaders ,for whities and replace with trebles.  Then put a single hook 3 feet up the line for cruising Lakers

??The wording about what constitutes a hook in the Ontario regs. were changed a couple of years ago.Check them if you want to take advantage of all that they have to offer. I will look and let you know what # section I refer to./quote]

What about most large plugs with trebles, not all get a piece of fish on them, and you take those out of a fishs mouth all summer long. Now, live bait and letting the fish swallow it , are a whole different ball game!

This quick strike with 2 trebles is not legal because the  quick strike is not a lure,  3 trebles on a rapala is counted as 3 hooks because it is part of a lure.
I heard that if you add a spinner blade to teh quick strike then it is now considered a lure and you can use 4 treble but that would be overkill. But 2 treble would now be legal  ( but I am not positive of the last info about the spinner blade.)
When Hell freezes over !!!!  I'll be there icefishing!!!

I have used the quick strike rig for some time now. The only problem with the bait being hooked at the head is that it tends to lead to a hookset that is down in the gullet of the fish. A lot of times these fish will not survive a hookset of this type. I have found that if you put one hook at the dorsal fin and the other towards the tail you will hook the fish in the side of the mouth and not the gullet. Since I CPR nearly all the Northerns that I catch I try not to do any damage that might cost that fish it's life. I'm sure that there are some that might not agree with these statements, however I can only speak from my over 40 years of fishing tip-ups and quickstrike rigs.

I have posted this before; I have been very happy with quick strike rigs for a couple decades and use them when ever its legal. When I get a flag and feel the fish at the end of the line, 90%+ of the time I hook the fish and almost always in the lips for a easy release. Also when I get to the tilt and pick up the line, if I feel a fish, I set the hook. No waiting, no guessing, I just set the hook and get the fish. I use double Ryder hooks for my rigs and that is the way they started out in England (for pike), were almost all fishing is catch and release. I have included a pic of a double Ryder hook. Partridge Hooks (now owned by Mustad) make the best, but its not hard to make your own.

I have used the trebles and like the double ryder hooks better.

I'm new to this... is there a reason you use fire line as a "leader", what the hook is tied to, and not a hard mono like 60lb Andes??

fireline is thinner per #, 30# fireline is diameter of 6# mono (i think 6).   Braided line is more abrasion resistant as well.
Sit in the house- or sit in the shanty, let's see, beer and crappies- I'm going fishing.
