Rainbow/Brown Trout Bait
« on: Jan 20, 2011, 08:01 AM »
Hello all,
Just wondering what everyone uses for bait for trout. I've heard that some prefer to use same jigs they would use for panfish(Jigs with spikes/mousies). Also what is everyone using on their tipups for bait(buckeyes, fatheads, rosies....)?

I'll be trying my first experience at targeting trout this weekend so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tight Lines,
Dave

I enjoy fishing with a medium sized spoon resembling a small raindow or perch coloring, tipped with a small chunck of raw shrimp or sucker meat. On my tip up i use a crappie rig tipped with spawn sacks or earthworms. Hope this helps dont be afraid to try everything in your tackle box though.

My number one trout bait is the Gluph roe cluster. The Bows just love this stuff! Then mealworms, worms and shiners. The shiners do not get as many flags as the other stuff, but they normally get the bigger Browns. I like to tip my jigs with waxworms

Live bait here's what I use in order of preference:

1) Waxies, maggots
2) Wigglers (may fly larvae)
3) mealworms
4) small red worms.

Minnows in order of preference:

1) Rosie Red Minnows
2) Fathead minnows.

Artificial bait:

Gulp Alive
Berkley Powerbait trout paste
Ultrabite premium Trout / Salmon bait

Hope this helps,

Wiener

here in vt we used to use hunts but new bait laws don't allow us to use them anymore, so now most use medium shiners

What the heck is a hunt? Never heard of that one if you don't mind me asking.
