Jiffy auger question?
« on: Jan 24, 2011, 08:22 AM »
My father in law has a older jiffy auger that runs well. The only problem is it is not cutting to well, even with new blades on it? Any thought on what needs to be done would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

do u know if the bolts holding blade are on correctly?  the nuts should be on the top not bottom makes all difference in world, even though u wouldn't think it  would.. also  make sure the point that contacts ice is sharp
Thank You

...might also be a bent auger...a good machinist might be able to figure that out for you. as a process of elimination, see if you can find a buddy that has the same drill auger and put your head on there and try it.

I had a dull point on the auger and it would not cut well and also ice stuck around the blade and point slows it down.

Can we just sharpen the point with a file? I hope so.

I have an older jiffy auger that cuts like new and I dont even take it out anymore. I bought a Nils hand auger and I can bore a hole faster with it with no noise or gas to worry about.

Yes you can touch up the point with a file- don't need to be too aggresive either. Just knock the burrs off and it will cut better.

i had a buddy that had the same problem with his center point.  his blades were sharp but it would not cut, he would have to rock the auger back and forth to get it to cut.  he actually made a new center point for it and it made all the difference in the world.  cuts like brand new now.

All good points. Also make sure the flat mounting part of the blade gets mounted on the INSIDE of the auger. I had the same trouble when I put on a new blade and mounted it on the outside.

Go to Jiffyonice and you will be able to get some sharping tips on the point. Or a new drill, shop around, maybe a buck-fifty. ;D
