Pimpin' out my shack
« on: Jan 21, 2011, 07:14 AM »
When I got my new Clam Kenai, I saw a great opportunity to MODIFY  ;D  ;D   So here is a start.  On my first trip out with the heater I found that where I wanted to put it, it seemed to REALLY heat up the side of the plastic sled right in front of it as well as the edge of my seat right above it.  So I used some extra duct work I had and a piece of fiberglass ceiling tile to "insulate" the plastic sled and nylon seat areas that I was concerned about being damaged by the heater.
This is a shot of the insulation from the back side of the panel before it got installed

Here are the two panels installed.  The large one right in front of the heater and the other small one to deflect the direct heat away from the edge of my seat.

On my first few trips I found that the jigging poles also needed a home when not in use.  A couple of pieces if 1 1/4" pvc and some 1x2 scrap lumber fixed that.

More modifications to come over this weekend.  My wife is out of town and I have the kids all weekend, so since I can't make it out on the ice I will spend the weekend trickin' out my shanty and watching football.   ( GO PACKERS!! )  Will post the next mods as they are compleeted.

Nice Mods. Anything to make life easier out there, and to keep the lines in the water longer. I did see one problem with your post though. I think you meant to type GO BEARS

Ok.  Just got back from a quick trip to Home Depot with some supplies, and quickly made a simple yet very helpful modification.

Just a simple 1x2 strip of lumber to keep my pails from sliding all around and tipping over.  I have a few of the HT polar therm tip ups so my tip up storage is the pail on the left.

Just a simple "L" bracked bolted through the sled and screwed to the wood.

Next up......a mount for the heater to keep it in place and a mount for my auger so that I don't have to slide it into the sled every time I move and get all my stuff inside filled with snow and slush.  Maybe some quick rod holders facing out in front and once it arrives in the mail I will need to build a small box in front of the pail on the right to hold my Showdown.

Ok....so I got going and couldn't stop.   Here is the rest so far.

Used some 1x2 wood to make a mount for the Heater using the slotted screw holes for hanging on the back of the heater.

here is the heater secured in its spot.

I used some Electrical conduit offsets for my auger mount.  They were not quite offset enough to make it around the nut that was in the way so I took the torch to them and bent them a little more.  Stuffed some foam inside the fitting down to the bend to "cork it" and filled the top with epoxy and set the hooks into it.

Just need to get a bungee cord and put in 2 eye hooks to strap it down and keep it from falling out.

All that is left is the box for the Showdown once it arrives and to put a couple eye hooks next to the seat opposite the heater to bungee the bait pail in.

Can't wait to get the new tricked out rig out on the ice :icefish:    Also really looking foward to getting my Showdown.  Hope UPS hurries up.
Never expected to end up with a full blown, tricked out ice fishing machine since this is my first season ice fishing.  Have only been out a few times......but I am HOOKED and went nuts  "big boy toy shopping" and now have all the goodies I need.  Now I just have to work on the last piece that wount come nearly as fast.........figuring out how to catch fish :roflmao: :woot:   At least I can do it in comfort and style now.

Just got my Showdown in the mail today      So I quickly made it a home.

Now I just need to get out on the ice again.

Was planning on taking the kids on their first ice fishing outing tomorow since the wife is out of town.  Oneida sounds like it has gotten worse  for walking conditions so I was going to take them to Sandy Pond and take the Clam and the two man briefcase shanty that my buddy gave me but it sounds like the conditions have deteriorated up there as well.  I can deal with the cold but it sounds like they got pounded up there with snow today and the slush was reported on one post as 4 - 6" with snow on top.  Not too bad for me and the 12 year old, but the 4 and 7 year old would have a hell of a time making it anywhere and would end up soaking wet too.

Hope this weather turns around soon!!!  I guess I picked a rough year here in CNY to take up Ice Fishing.

the little ones will get wet and cold unless there is a beaten path been there and done all that , I have question what did you do with all the space under the seat ? and with the auger holder how do you put a cover on it ?

The space under the seat is mostly open.  The heater is under the right side of the seat, the bait pail is going to be bungeed to the opposite corner.  Right under the seat and the area behind the seat that dosn't have any "Permanent " storage rigged up will just be  "catch all" space for tackle trays, gloves, snacks ect.

As far as a cover.....never thought of that :-\ :-\.  I'm new to all this.  Thought the people that had covers on them were mostly the ones pulling them with sleds or wheelers to keep all the spray flying behind them from ending up in the shanty.  I suppose if I found I wanted a cover I would just buy one of the covers and cut a pair of 1 1/2" slits in the cover and stitch around them so it wouldn't fray.  I could put the cover on before the auger and just have the 2 auger hooks sticking through the holes in the cover and put the auger on after.

the guide cover might be big enough to fit over , and i use the space under the seat for my jig bag and graph ,you have a great design not busting on ya honest questions ,old guys can learn to  ;) and covers are a friend if it snows hard by the end of the day every thing needs cleaning up ,

I didn't take it as "busting on it" at all.  Yeah, the under seat area will likely have a few tackle trays in it for my jigs and stuff.  And I still have enough space left open behind the seat for snacks and gloves and whatever else.

Didn't think about the heavy snow filling it when I was moving.  Guess I would have realised that the first time I was out in a heavy snow :woot:.  May look into the cover thing latter.  I am guessing they will likely go on sale toward the end of the season.  I dumped way too much $$$ into this real quick already this season.  The wife wouldn't be too happy with a $50 cover right now too.   I can't really b***h though.......I went from 3 poles and 2 tip ups I got on clearance last March to a fully decked out fishing rig with a new Sonar and all.  Now I just need to get some time to fish.  I am determined to figure out Oneida....have had a hell of a time most times out in the boat so I am hoping I can learn to do a bit better on the ice.

OK filetandrelease....you got my wheels turning when you asked what I was doing with the space under the seat.  Now I am thinking that some sort of organizer shelf hanging from the underside of the seat might be real nice to hold tackle trays under the seat.

My jigging poles I got last year have really short butt sections so they woun't stay in the cut out areas on the Kenai sled that are intended to be used as rod holders

So I wanted to make something where I could set the pole down quick to go grab a flag, re-bait or whatever without just setting it down in the slush.  The 1 1/2" pvc that I used on the rod storage behind the seat didn't quite fit in the rod holder hole in the sled so I shaved it down a little bit.

I was then able to just wedge it into the rod holder slot in the sled.  It fits nice and snug so I don't have to fasten it in at all and then when I get better quality poles latter that will fit in the original  rod holder slots I can just slide it out if I want.

You are defenalty gonna want a cover of some sort.  just my $.02  They are well worth thed 50 clams, I have used an old tent and bungee rope up until this year and finally broke down and bought a real 1 should of done it years ago they are 100 times better.

Got out to test everything out thismorning.  Fishing was a little tough.....a lot of lookers.....not many bitters.....but I was fishing in STYLE.  All the mods worked great on the ice.  And I LOVED my Showdown.  The sensitivity is great.  The sensitivity can be adjusted from 1 - 25.  I have a barrel swivel about 18" from my Rapalla jigand I can see the swivel with the sensitivity set all the way down to 5.

Not the mother load....but at least I got something for the fry pan.  The big one was almost 13".
