Adding Scents to Dead Frozen Bait
« on: Jan 19, 2011, 10:23 AM »
Im plan on stashing a load of bait fish next summer for hard water and i was wondering how you guys scent them. Like making them really oily and stanky for the green monsters ;D

I smother my deadbait in smelly jelly.  Pike also like salt and crushed garlic some times. Everyone's got their own sauce. Fish oil and worm oil also shrimp anything oily will spread out from were you drop it in. Catch a hog. I cant top 8lbs this year for some reason, lots o mini pike, no log, were do you fish I live in north idaho

My bait smells enough as is! If you want to add extra scent try chopping up some smelt or other oily fish, add some water, mix it up more and chum the holes with the mix. For any species of fish I prefer natural homemade flavorings over any pre made flavorings. Companies put preservatives and other chemicals in their flavorings and I think if you use the right natural ingredients you'll get more action. I would rather eat fresh homemade food over processed pre made food, and I don't see why fish wouldn't be the same way.

Lots of supermarkets have bags of frozen smelt by the seafood section. Around $5 a bag where I live.

The choped up smelt is a good plan and most places do have them, do not go to a fishing retailer they want too much money. Smelly jelly is the brand name and comes in several flavors I use pink witch is shrimp it lives up to its name get one in a squeez bottle, you do not want it on your hands. Also dump a pile of guts heads ect down a hole and come back to the same spot next time. Always works for me at least you will draw some channel cats or pike.

ive never really chumed but it sounds like a great idea and can you pick up the jelly at a wal mart or something along those lines or is it strictly a baitshop thing

try buying shad guts and putting that on them or you can by shell fish oil and put your bait in a zip loc then fill it with shad oil and freeze
early to bed early to rise fish like h.e.l.l. and think up lies.

how did it suck. your brother caught one bigger than you'll probably ever see at your rate.. You just werent in the right spot. Your brother had the dike covered. Everywhere else back in there is dead water. You gotta go way out past my ice shack, out where it opens up.
