Bucket of fun tonight!
« on: Jan 18, 2011, 07:39 PM »
Headed out after work to see if I could find an evening bite.  Drilled 4 holes with the gator while waiting for my GPS to get a lock so I could find where we had fished before.  Bounced between those 4 holes for 15 minutes and finally went to the gps to see how close I was.  I was not quite in the right area so I made a small move and found some open holes from this morning or yesterday.  I dropped in the vex in the first hole and it was game on.  I never moved from that hole and brought home 23 crappies and 34 gills.  Nothing big, but big enough to eat.  It was non stop action from 4:30-7 when I left and they were still bitiing.  I was worried I was at my crappie limit, so I counted my fish and left.  Here is a bucket shot of the crappie with a stray gill I missed when I sacked them up......was nice to actually catch something after the 2 days this weekend.

Yep...and that is not counting the 20 or more I tossed back and I don't know how many crappies that got off at the hole.  I had a guy come over and watch for about 5 minutes and after the 12th fish went in the pile in those 5 minutes, he just shook his head and said... "I need to get a vex."  He was fishing 20 yds away and only catching the ones that came in by the bottom.  I was catching fish from right below the ice to the bottom in 12 ft and everywhere in between.  Sometimes there would be 7 -10 fish under me at all different depths and I would start with the one closest to the ice and work my way down, but they kept replentishing.  I bet half the crappie I caught were less than 2 feet down.  When they are like that you can catch fish fast...no time wasted waiting for you line to sink.

Wow...I hope to experience that some day...the crappie bite on the pond was slow (1 13" fish) but the gills were biting...9 nice keepers between 7.5 - 8.75.

Great job on those panfish.  Glad to see you are getting use out of the gator.  Still haven't used mine yet.  When I went Monday, the ice was only 4 inches. Three inches in some spots.

Now that the gator is hooked to the auger I probably will stay there until the ice leaves.  There is not a ton of ice out there, but when you don't know how many holes you are going to have to drill to find fish, it makes it worth brining it along.  I always take the old handle along too in case something goes wrong with the gator.

Good idea on bringing the handle along.  You never know.  I don't know when I will get out again, but I am pretty sure I will be taking the gator along.
