Snowmobile races near Brainerd a few years back. Bunch of trailers parked on the ice. They broke through one night. I think there were some guys sleeping in a few of them.

They ever figure out why the trailers sank?  Too much weight too close, or did the ice shift and a lead open up? or what......?

I think they were just too close together on ice that wasn't thick enough. If memory serves me right some of the tow vehicles were on land and some of the vehicles and trailers were in shallower water so at least some of them were not destroyed.

i would say that the ice must have shifted or was way WAY too thin, as i have seen 20+ trucks parked right next to each other about 20' off shore on saratoga, when there was only 8" of ice.

It was a very warm winter to that point.  There was roughly 14" of ice there,  but the vehicles were to close together.  No-one was in the vehhicles.  I don't believe the 8" with vehicles for a minute.

Originally from Brainerd, MN, was there then.
Noone was hurt, but many had the dookie scared out of them.
It was an unusually mild winter that year, ice was real thin  and sporadic. One spot would have 16 in, 10 feet away was 4 inches. wierd year. We had a number of snowmobiles, atvs and other vehicles go through that year.

Snowmobile race goes on after trailers fall into lake

DETROIT LAKES (AP) -- A big snowmobile race went ahead this weekend despite an accident that nearly sank the event.

Eleven snowmobile trailers, a camper and two pickup trucks fell through the ice before dawn Saturday, taking tool boxes, generators, all-terrain vehicles, fuel containers and other equipment to the bottom of Big Detroit Lake.

The water was deep enough to cover the pickups, said Mike Nodsle, a member of the Ultra Snowmobile Club, which hosted the World Snowmobile Association Pro Ice race.

Two sets of divers and three wrecking companies worked Saturday and part of Sunday to pull the submerged trailers and vehicles from the icy water. They hauled the last one out Sunday afternoon.

World Snowmobile Association officials decided to go ahead with the two-day race because many racers had traveled a long distance for the event. Saturday's racing started four hours late.

About 150 contestants pre-registered for the 10th annual event, which is one of the region's largest snowmobile competitions. Racers came from North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Canada.

Some racers who lost equipment in the water worked all night to get their sleds ready to race Sunday. Some gave up after recovering their equipment.

"Some of them just packed up and went home," Nodsle said.

Those who stayed concentrated on winning Sunday as they whipped around the half-mile oval track at more than 100 mph, kicking up clouds of snow as they rounded the ends of the track.

The only mishap Sunday was a racer flipping his snowmobile. He wasn't injured.

"No more problems," Nodsle said. "Just a typical race day."
