Which jigging rods do you use for panfish?
« on: Sep 14, 2004, 02:42 PM »
Just curious as to what brands everyone uses.  I have heard good thing about the Thorne Bros. Sweetheart rods.  Also what type of line does everyone use?  I try and use the lightest mono that I can.  I thought about using some of the new power pro or braided lines, but didn't know if they would get too stiff.  Thanks Russ

Cant help much in the rod department, am having troubles of my own there. But as far as string goes, if you fish in a shack the superlines work fine. They stay limp enough. Their drawback from what I have seen is in the fact they dont get as many bites as mono or flourocarbon. I suppose you could use a leader, but I just use flouro mainlines and dont fool with leaders.

I agree with the St. Croix rods - I have two, and they are fantastic rods.  I also have a couple HT Signature Series that are very nice, and not very expensive rods.  I have an 18" Frabill that is a fantastic sight fishing / microlight rod.

As far as Line goes i like to use the ICe lFIreline.......Strong and Super sensitive and It doesnt mess up cause it has no memory...Much like Trapper dirk:>  Now i DOn't do the name brands when it comes to The rod and Reel only becasue its what ever u feel is best for you....I have this No name ROd that i GOt its super stiff but i can feel just the slightest bites when it COmes to PErch and its great for whitefish and lakers....SO..it just depends on what ya like to fish with and what your accustomed to...But the Line.......I wont do without my fireline:> SOrry.....
Please don't take offense to Germ's |Posts they are in no way shape or Form ...Ment to discredit or Discourage any other peoples post's..Please take Germ with a grain of salt and Rememeber it is all ment in good fun and if you Would like something changed on a post of mine mesage me ill fix it

I use the South Bend 24" blizzard rod with an ultralite reel. The rod is very sensitive and has an average backbone to it. I use 2lb. test berkley micro ice with this combo as well- it seems to do the job for me. however, my rod is now broken, so i am open to anyone's ideas of a good rod to use.

I use a HT Polar Gold, PLG-25, 25" ultarlight. Very sensitive tip, good backbone for hook sets.

Two Thorne Brothers' Panfish SweetHeart Plus, each with a spring bobber - sweet!!  Good balance, Great sensitivity.  Line is 2 lb Berkeley MicroIce with Seaguar Carbon Ice leader.

I have a Frabill Sensive combo that I like very much. Spooled with 4 lb Berkley Micro Ice or Stren Iron Thread.

In shallow water though, and old fiberglass jigging pole with a spring bobber works just as well for me.

I been looking at the Thorne Panfish sweethearts and the Finesse plus too. I like the tiny guides for very small jigging movements. Fish Stick I am a big Jaws fan and especially Quint. Robert Shaw was such a great actor.

I'm a big fan of Robert Shaw also, Mr.Seaguar. He was such a great actor, a shame that he died so young.

I use a light action frabill ultra ice jigging rod in the 30" length. I like the extra length for panfish as it seems to help keep them hooked.
Fireline and other superlines don't work well for me, they freeze too much. I also don't like the way you can't feel your jig thump back down on it. For that reason I don't use it, even in a shack. I like original stren in 4 pound test or 2 pound test for really small lures.

I like the berkely lightning ice rods very sensitive and I have landed burbot up to 35.5" and a 7lb pike on 6lb vanish. The only thing i don't like about it is the reels are not made to last.(cheap)

Here's another vote for the Frabill Amplifier ultralite.  The sensitivity is unbelievable.  I bought it for panfish, but I've caught walleyes and whitefish up to 4# on it, too.
I have an old Daiwa ultralite reel (don't even know the model anymore) mounted on it, spooled with 2# Stren Hi-Vis Gold.  I usually tie on a length of 2# Seaguar florocarbon, probably don't need it but I feel a little more confident with it.  I don't like Berkley Vanish though, the knot strength seems weak to me.

HT Ice Blue UL, with 2 lb. Mirco Ice. I absolutly LOVE this rod. The sensitivity is just awesome. Even on days when the fish are barey hitting the jigs at all, I can always tell when I have a bite. No need for a spring bobber!
This year I may spend the extra $$$$$ get a Frabill SenSive or Amplifier, because I just love a good sensitive rod.

Frabill has the best quality graphite jigging rods for a moderate price around. The lighter and smaller sensive, amplifier, and ultra ice series rods are awesome. Get a rod that's light enough, but has enough backbone to feel hits and to set hooks. I like the looks of the smallest sensive. It's like 20" long and has a very light action and great sensitivity. Yet it still has some backbone.

I use the same rod for all my ice fishing. I got it from my grandfather, it's probably a hundred years old and has never broken down, not once ;D

I make my own using old tip sections from broken graphite ul spin rods.  cut them off to length and insert them into a wood dowel cut to length and sanded down smooth.  add a reel and a spring bobber and you have a cheap, sensitive rod

I fish bluegills with an "ice blue" 24" and an ultralight reel loaded with XL 2lb clear.  Perch are on a ThorneBros 25" lite action and a shakespeare UL with 4lb green XL.  Walleyes and deep perch are a 28" medium light ST croix premier and my trout Penn 4200SS and 6lb XL green.  Bigger fish are chased with a custom 30 medium/heavy with an old Mitchell (made in France of metal) and 10pb green XL.

My wife thinks I overdo the jigging rods and fishing gear in general but she also has a matching rod in each category so she doesn't complain too loudly!

I picked up a 24" frabill panfish popper around thanksgiving. The spring bobber is very sensitive, but I would recommend this rod to be used only when temperatures 32 degrees or higher. I've had a problem with the spring getting full of ice, and then it will stretch and "curl" my 2lb test really bad when i reel up the line.

I use a HT Ice blues ultralight with 2lb trilene ice. Yesterday I picked up a MedLight St Croix and a Gander Mt. guide series reel at Gander. It spooled it with 6lb Trilene Ice. I got it mainly for trout but it is definatly light enough for panfish and has enough backbone for walleye.

All I need now is some ice.....and a vex....
Many are cold, but few are frozen
