How Have Mora's Improved Over the Years?
« on: Jan 08, 2011, 06:15 PM »
I'm getting tired of hearing how me taking the lazer to go find fish leaves my fishing partners only able to fish the holes they are at... So I decided to go ahead and buy a second auger. I know.. they should buy their own but at least this way I have a backup if something was to ever happen to mine.

So I had a gift card thinger from sportsmans guide, and a discount. Ended up ordering a 5" mora and payed $40. (money is a little tight to get another lazer)

Now I got to thinking about using an old mora when I first started ice fishing, auger was probably a good 25 years old and drilled like crap. Wondering if the new augers are any better than the old ones? I hope I didn't just buy a $40 shanty anchor...

They're pretty good, my 6inch cuts just fine and i haven't changed the blades in 3 years...

When it was new it was pretty fast, but nothing like my nils.

as long as the word Sweden is on the bottom of the blades, you will be fine...I have a 7" with Swedish blades that cuts through the ice like butter  12" ice today, about 10 seconds drilling through it.

Don't worry about it, take the Lazer with you and tell the buds you expect to see 40 new holes when you get back. ;)

Let your friends use the mora, you use the lazer. They will soon buy their own.

My father bought the mora 6 that i use now 28 yrs ago an he handed it down to me 10yrs plus. I do not have any trouble blowing holes with the auger although a power head would be nice($$$)! I plan on handing it down to my kids in the ne'er future and with some Swedish blades im sure it will serve them just fine.Just my .02.

BBK,
I don't think there is any difference in the old 80's Mora vs the newer ones of the same design. I lost an 8" one back 10 years or so and replaced it with another, same color and design. I see no visual difference. But what everyone says about cheap and quality blades rings true. If you still had that one from years back, a fresh pair of Svedish blondes err, blades, would probably revive it just fine!  @)

How have they improved you ask????

They haven't.

I had one way back when.....way back...when I was graduating from a spud to an auger. It was brutal then, and they're brutal now. The spud was easier :-\

Had the same problem when I bought mine two years ago chinese blades called strikemaster and told them I was having trouble cutting holes and all they wanted was the serial# off the blades and they rushed me a new set of swedish blades free of charge in two days cuts like butter and they were very friendly on the phone also PS probably wouldn't tell you this if I had stock in the company call them! They didn't improve over the years.

My dad has a Strikemaster Mora 6" because he needed an auger and didn't want to spend much. Its all china made blades and all. The auger cuts very well (for a Mora) but the edge of the blades tend to fold over fairly easy. I take a flat diamond hone and remove the bur on the edge at the end of every season for him.
