Am I better off moving to a different lake?
« on: Jan 09, 2011, 06:41 PM »
I fished Wawasee this morning and the nicer fish stopped biting after the morning.  Given the amount of sun today, should I have been off switched to a lake with more color in the water?

Its hard to say.  I went to a large local lake to sight fish, and ice was mostly bare with out snow cover I just picked the biggest patch of snow covered area on the flat and drilled on the snow covered area.  Nothing special but ended up with a mess of 19 eaters.  Was wawa mostly bare or did you find patches of snow?

the other day I was ready to move to another lake but we stayed and I'm glad we did. I think we tend to move to other lakes too quickly, but I do think we need to move around on that lake. Hard call a lot of times. I know I tend to move too quickly.

Fished the back of Conklin Bay @ Wawasee.  A couple inches of snow cover.  Consistent fish in the 5-8 fow, with Crappie caught earlier in the morning.  Caught small gills consistently all day.

I  think the related question that I always think about is - Is the fishing on any given day pretty much the same regardless of the lake?

If yes, the it probably doesn't make sense to change lakes during the day.

I think a lot of things factor in on how good you will do on any given day. If you know the lake your on and there are fish and you know what your doin but your just not catching fish you have look at things like , what's the pressure  like , did a front move in or out , has it stayed steady up or down . I have looked at a " what's the best days and time to fish  calendar" for a lot of years now and it is pretty close to dead on. I like to stay put so I try to find a place where I can catch all the species of fish in one spot with out having to move to much . But sometimes a new place is just fun , it new , its different...I can tell you from looking at this site , nomatter what if you are in the same geometric area and other people are catching  fish you should be too. If you like the place you fish and its close to home stay put. If you just can't stand it move. It's all you can do.

The slip is notorious for a bite that lasts about 30-45 minutes after daybreak then slows down, especially since the 'first ice' bite is pretty much done now.  I don't know if the pike get the gills moving around once the sun comes up, but I have seen this type of bite more times than not when fishing the slip.  This is one reason I don't fish there anymore.
