Laws and regs on sunken boats?
« on: Jan 06, 2011, 07:13 AM »
I haven't had a lot of luck fishing this year but I have found a couple of boats on the bottom of some lakes. I was wondering what hoops i would have to jump thru to try and recover and register the boats I have found so far, if they are repairable.

just a though but do you think it is going to be worth it to raise a boat that has been down for who knows how long, restore it and register it? Sounds like alot of money and work for not much return or risk of no return and a loss.

Also who do you think the DNR/DEQ/EPA is gonna bill if while you are raising it it dumps fuel/oil/coolant etc into the lake?

Just doesnt seem practical.

What kind of boats are you thinking of raising?
If it were row boats or a small speed boat ,it may be worth while.

When I saw the subject, I almost expected a thread on how to tear off the MC-#'s from your boat and sinking it to get rid of it, or to provide structure for fish!

How many o2 tanks do you need to get something like that to the surface or off the bottom to get a cable around it?

I suppose I should have been a little clearer on the boat type. One is about a 14' row boat in 8 ft of water, the other I think is a canoe in 15' of water. Anything else would be to much work but I think I could make these float again.

I know couple guys who live on a river and both fish from boats the pulled from the bottom.  Ones a 12' and the other is a 14'    they only run a electric trolling motor with a battery or row them by hand so I don't believe its necessary to have them registered unless your using a powered engine. Don't quote me on that..im not sure!       All thy had to do was get the mud out or from around the boat and flip the boat upside down and it easily lifted up and pulled it to shore.   Its a shame people will lose there boat in a storm or highwater and just forget about it.    Liquid nails works great for fixing leaks

the canoe may be an easy job!  a rope and grappling hook and a 10 INCH auger and you could be in business!

If they are both aluminum, which it sounds like they are, they should be just fine! lift them and fish them!

I thought the motor has to be self powered....not have a seperate power source to be classified as a motor.  I know a guy who had two boats in the water behind his house.  Either of them registered.  One was a paddle boat with a electric trolling motor the other was a 14' aluminum with a old 8 horse outboard that didn't even run. It was only on the boat because the guy was trying to get it to run and couldn't.  He didn't tie it off very good and the boat ended up drifting downriver into lake superior.  Someone spotted the boat with nobody in it and called 911 and they had sherriff coast guard and even a hellicoptet looking for a body!  They found out who the boat belonged to through old expired registration on the boat from the previous owner.  The police showed up at his house the next day with a bill for recovering the boat and a ticket for no registration for having the motor that didn't even run on it.  He asked if he was breaking the law by having a electric trolling motor on his unregistered paddle boat....they told him no.     So I don't really know what to think...I guess ill have to read it on the dnt website to really know.

I have heard the same thing but i thought it was 12' and less not 14'  but not sure. I have used JB weld to patch small leaks and they are still holding years later. you never know a small boat like that might not even have any hloes it could have tipped or filled with rain and sunk. any how have fun trying to get them.

My son tried this a couple years ago. The police told him he had to turn the boat over to them they would try to find owner if not they would call him. They would not give him a time of how long they would look for owner. We had boat in yard we took it back out an sunk it for structure.
