I don't think the walleyes are extinct; in fact, there are too many.  They are like the perch in Upsata; too many for the forage base.  That is why there are so many 12-13 inchers.  I got this info from the fisheries biologist that handles CF, Hauser, and Holter.

I've fished it several times in the winter without much luck on the walleyes.   I have caught a few nice perch and trout but zippo on the 'eyes.

I think what makes it so good in the spring makes it tough during the ice-fishing season.    In the spring it warms quickly due to the shallowness and the 'eyes pour in there to get to the warmer water.

In the winter, it's so shallow there is not much of a temperature difference in the entire column of water so I think they move into the east side of the Causeway and closer to the main lake.

This is just my opinion, take it or leave it but I haven't had much luck through the ice out there.

Good luck, I was just giving you an honest opinion of what I experienced.   I trust you'll post a report after you give it a go?

I agree with FishN4Eyes. I thought I was the only person fishing lake Helena for Eyes through the ice until last year. I pulled out some very nice perch and some decent trout but only a few eyes and they were small. If your looking for Walleye during ice season, don't waist your time. Go as soon as the ice is off and the temp warms up but your not going to pull out any monsters. There are too many Walleye in Hauser and that's why the 2011 Regulations have changed for this lake. Keep the SMALL Walleye and let all the Reproducing Perch Go!

Good plan UMRFish4fish, at least until a guy can catch a 1# walleye or a dozen perch (in one 24hr period).  The last couple of years I haven't even bothered with Hauser, due to the fact that I can't catch any perch.  A good day of perchin' beats any day of catching tiny walleye.  I think you actually get more meat off of a 6" perch than you do off of a 10" walleye.
