Grab and Drops
« on: Jan 10, 2011, 06:54 AM »
This weekend was out and had a lot of grab and drops.  By the time we got out to the tip up line would be out and there would be no Shinner.  Is there any good way to help prevent a grab and drop with a normal tip up?  Would I have to use a slammer type of set up or possibly would a quick strike rig help my chances of getting a hook into the northern?

X 2

Quick strike rigs will help the hooking percentage.

if you dont like quick strikes try titanium leaders crimpt to your hook. low-viz and less metal in the fishes mouth.

Right now I am running leaders that are made out of 20# Fire line and 30# Power Pro.  Have never had any issues yet with Buite off with this set up.  I also run a Number 10 trebble hook.

Something that i have started doing on my tipups is placing a rubber band 20-30 feet back in the spool from where i set the depth of my bait with a quick strike rig.
This giving the pike that distant to swim before the rubber band stretches and sets the hook. I have seen 8lb pike with the hook set and the rubber band still in tact. This also helps keep them out of the weeds and brush.

I half hitch the rubber band around the line and then place the loop of the rubber band around the spool. Usually 20-30 feet back. Depending on what fish i am targeting. I get great hookups and no swallowed baits.

Hope this helps

I have read this in a couple of other threads.  I think I understand what you are talking about.  Has anyone posted pictures up of this yet?  I want to make sure that i do this right.

I've posted the instructions a couple of times, (sorry no pics yet)

but it's not that hard to do.  It sound like you've got a pretty good set up.

Take a rubber band and pull off 10 to 15 feet of line deeper than you want to fish.  Tie the rubber band around your line with a couple of half hitches.  open the loop on the rubber band and slide it over the spool on your tip up.  re-wrap the line onto the spool by hand to the depth you want to fish, and set up your tip up normally.

Now a fish hits, runs off the 10 feet of line, the rubber band pulls on the line (setting the hooks) and then the fish breaks the rubber band and continues to run.  Only difference is he can't drop the bait because the hooks have been set.

Hope this helps,

I played around with this at home and think I got it all figured out.  How heavy of a rubber band do you use though?  There are the ones that are real skinny all the way up to the ones that are roughly .25" wide.  I am guessing just one in the middle but figured i would ask.

Most people use rubber bands that are way too large.

All you need it to do is set the hooks before breaking.

You want it to break so that the fish can then take line.

Everybody that sets tip ups has run and drops. Sometimes they are more frequent than other times. I don't know what size hooks you are using but when I have run and drops I at least keep my bait. I use 1\0 steel snelled hooks and suckers live and dead. Single hooks are easier on the fish. I myself don't think you even need a treble. If you let the fish run properly a single will work just fine. Run offs are gonna happen but your hooks might be too small to keep the bait on.
