Fake weeds for structure...anyone ever use them?
« on: Dec 17, 2010, 09:02 PM »
Has anyone ever used these?  sounds like it makes sense but then again maybe it doesn't...lol  I'd hate to spend the money on a bust.  I fish some reservoirs that are pretty flat with no structure but I'm not sure that the fish would be able to find or would be attracted to the fake weeds in an hour or two.   I wonder what it does to a Vex or Marcum?      Whats your thoughts?      Gimmick or genius?

I have read about this in a magazine a few years ago. I bought some and gave it a go. I drilled a series of holes and put artifical weeds down with a tip-up and minnow in the center of the set up. It was the only tip-up I didn't catch anything on that day. I never tried it again.

We used them last year.  You can save alot of money and do what we did.  Go to hobby lobby and buy the fake stuff.  It didn't work by the way, kind of a pain in the butt.  Was a good idea and had a little fun.  Used 12"x12"x1" rigid insulation board to hang them from.

get some xmas garland cheap, espically after xmas, take some heavy fishing line I used some 20 lb I had, cut to length garland and strand of fishing line leave enough at the bottom to tie some bell wieghts on for weight, take some line tie garland to line running the length of the garland, I bought some of the xmas light plastic holders they look like a cord holder and tie the line to it right in the center I left about 15 foot of line and wraped it up so i could drop the garland weed lol, down to different depths. Cost I paid dollar for the plastic holders and dollar apiece for the garland now this was after xmas, sure beats 50 bucks for the real weeds, and they work just fine. Do they work undecieded but if I dont deciede they are worth it im not out 50 bucks maybe 5 bucks at the most. Ill take a pic and post later.

Used them for the past few years to cover the camera cable, about a 4' section, seemed to work very well.  Might have drawn more fish in but truth be told did not test the "with-without" on the same lake when fish were being caught.
