ice rigger modified
« on: Nov 14, 2013, 09:09 PM »
I have modified my ice rigger into a slammer. I just took a piece of wire from a coat hanger, bent a J on the one end. Bent the other end into a close loop , that holds a key chain split ring. The J just hooks around the bottom of the alligator clip, the ring end holds the rod down by looping around the eye which is bent up slightly. This split ring method has been used in several homemade slammers I have come across online. I already had the ice rigger and can use it as one if I choose to. It seems to work pretty good.

I took the old short rod holders off of mine and made some longer ones using 1-1/2"  PVC and glued them on with some epoxy. The old ones were way to short for some of the shorthandled rods I use. I also cut that little twist lock slot (or whatever you would call it) into the PVC so I don't have to worry about losing my rods as much anymore when using the iceriggers. Not only that, but it puts the rods in a more upright position. With the old holders the reels would rest on the board and would get pulled out of them fairly easy or even just fall out completely. I also had one of the old ones break on me in transit before which is why I decided to replace them in the first place
.

I've done the about the same thing only using 60lb power pro to the line, rod release. I use it on 4' rods for lake trout. I also put a bobber on the line the slides for the fish to have some line to run with. Works great. Also works for walleyes.

4' shakespear rods found in a hardwear store a couple years ago on clearance. They double as my grand kids boat rods. Solid fiberglass, constriction bands for rod holders. I've also seen a 4 1/2' ugly stick and I use it to jig with for lake trout.

Hey Bobbyz If this rig sets the Hook for you it may get you into trouble. Keep it off Simcoe they will charge you. A friend had an Auto fisherman self setting outfit two years back and was warned. The law was newer then.  just letting you know Check the regs.

If it uses rod tension to set the hook it is OK.  Spring loaded devices are a no-no in Ontario.   :)
