WNY Lakes Advice
« on: Jan 25, 2016, 06:48 PM »
I'm new to Western NY originally from Iowa and I'm living in the Buffalo area now. It seems to finally be getting enough ice around here and I'm looking for advice on places to try. I think I'm going to head to Honeoye this Sunday but looking for other ideas to try. Thinking about Chautauqua as well but I haven't really found any firm ice reports or know the lake enough to feel safe there yet.

If I lived in Buffalo I would be at Chautauqua

Do you think the ice will be good to go this weekend?

I fish Honeoye a lot its a great place to get big bluegills and bass.
That's a Bluegill, no that's a Sunfish...I've heard it both ways!!

Gillpill any advice for a first timer at Honeoye? I've read some reports saying the south end is hot right now for gills so thats my plan is to head down there and search.

Chautauqua is great for perch. I was hoping to get out there this weekend but getting solid info on ice condition is difficult.

I was on Chautauqua Lake this morning solid 5-6 inches on burtis bay in Celoron. People are fishing the North end too but the ice is still a little sketchy based on the reports I've seen. Burtis bay is only 3-5 feet deep and plenty safe. Small Boat Harbor is also a great local spot in Buffalo, mostly tiny pan-fish but good action and you never really know what you might catch there.

West side anywhere from 5-10 feet if water has been great. Small tungsten jigs with spikes or waxworms has worked best. The bite has been best for us real early and then last hour before dark. If you have any other questions message me my good man.

Thanks everyone for the advice! We'll make it out this weekend somewhere as long as this rain didn't damage the ice too bad.
