Lake Trout Getting Conditioned To Tubes
« on: Nov 16, 2010, 02:53 AM »
It seems in some areas bigger lake trout seem to be getting conditioned to tubes because literally almost everyone uses them most of the time. What are some other good options you guys use for bigger macks as far as jigging lures?

I have the same issue with bucktail jigs on my lake. I switched to the tubes and they smash them. On 1 of the northern lakes all they wanted was a Copper dimpled spoon. I use sucker or shiner trailers, that seems to help turn them on during a slow day. I always run my camera so I can see what they want and adjust the presentation, I can tell almost immediately if what I'm using is gonna work by the way they come in. If they're interested or pi$$ed at it they circle it with their front fins down at 45 degrees and the circles get smaller until they grab it ! The lakers act exactly like sharks when they come in to hit a bait !!  :woot:

large hammered pimples in nickel or nickel/ drk. blue or dark green. i put a smelt tail or strip of sucker on the treble. bang on the bottom, pause then pull up . usually get them on the pull up or just as its fluttering back to the bottom. watch for slack line.

My first choice would be large Airplane Jigs.  ( I love the action on 'em)
You can also experiment with different bait for tipping on the airplane jigs.

Next choice would be large spoons, for jigging.
These could also use some bait.

As for colors, on the Airplane jigs, I like white, blue/green, and yellow.
Spoons :  Start with Hammered Chrome, Hammered Silver, Hammered Gold.
Then go to plain White, (Glow) Chrome, Gold, or a combo of colors.

With Spoons you can also add some of the lure making tape to change colors. ( I think the brand name is Witchcraft tape)
Sometimes weird colors are the ticket for an exciting day.

Hope this helps,

Wiener

Bucktails and marabous.  After all, those are really more of the originals, and caught fish before tubes ever existed.

Try a squid that you use for trolling on the back of an airplane jig. They are real tough and look great "swimming". I've also use a squid with a jig inside. I end up using a stinger hook as the bodies are a little long but have diffrent action when falling with a lot more movement. Also try diffrent jig weight's on off days, heavier drop faster fall and light for slower and change sizes.

Another trick on Flaming Gorge everyone uses a "chunk of meat". I use salted minnow and hook the minnow side ways so it glides on the fall. Looks like something alive.
In the memory of "Team Lighting" Fish ON!
No one ever says,"Man that fish tastes small.
Thank you Lord for thinkin bout me. I'm alive and doin fine!!!!!!
