Heaters
« on: Nov 18, 2010, 10:11 AM »
What would you guys recommend to heat a portable, Fish Trap X2???  I bought one last year and used it just a couple times and I sucked it up and did not use a heater, I am looking at getting out on the ice a lot more this winter and want to stay nice and toasty.  Thanks in advance!!!

I use a big buddy or a 1 burner tank top heater. Depends how many are in the flip over.

Get the Big Buddy heater.

It has enough power to keep you out when things get very cold. (up to 18,000 BTU)
And with two propane bottles, it will last most of the day unless you have it on max continuously.

You can also get a hose and larger tank for the heater so that you don't have to change bottles as often.
If you get the green hose, you don't need the filter.  If you buy the regular black hose, you will need the filter assembly as well.

Hope this helps,

Wiener

I've got the regular buddy and the big buddy. The regular size buddy (4,000 or 9,000 BTUs) is warm enough for all but the really cold days.

I'd buy the reconditioned ones from Cabelas.  They are only $79.99 and you can have it shipped to the store for pick-up.

For future reference.... keep an eye out at Lowes, early March, when they are getting rid of their heaters.  GREAT savings then.

You can't go wrong with the Big Buddy.  Have both Buddy heaters and like them both.  They both serve there purpose.  Use the Big Buddy in my permanent shack and the Buddy when using my scout because its alot lighter than the Big Buddy.  Fin

I've got both, but I don't think I used the big buddy at all last year.  I just like to be comfortable, not overly warm, and the regular buddy normally does a fine job in my Trekker2. It's quite a little lighter and smaller than the big buddy, which is one reason I like it, since I always drag by hand. You might want to check out a Menards or Lowes type of store, they usually have them a lot cheaper than regular sporting goods stores.

I got one of those and a small 1 gallon propane tank.  I didn't even use a full gallon last year, but my wife is looking to go more with me this year so it will probably be on.

I have a Buddy Heater and it works great.  I've also used it in my tent when I go deer hunting.  I recommend it to a few friends who like it as well.

The Mr. Buddy puts out 4000 to 9000 BTU's
The Mr. Buddy Jr. puts out 3800 BTU's

I'ver read most guys only turn on their Mr. Buddy to 4,000 BTU's.

Wonderin if anybody uses the Jr Buddy for 2-man shanties?  Would it put out sufficient heat?

I use the little buddy in my Thermal X but only on nicer days (low teens or above) with not much wind. Which in this area isn't too often. It does come with however on nasty days as a back up.
