Small pond Crappies
« on: Nov 14, 2010, 09:49 PM »
Hey guys,

Been taking my 3yr old son over to a small pond and he has been catching the heck out of crappies.  Just wondering aside from scouring the lake drilling holes come winter time where to look close to shore or out in the middle.

There is little to no structure in the lake.  I was thinking i should be able to find them close to where we are catching them right now at first ice maybe just a bit deeper.  I am guessing this pond bottoms out no deeper than 10 feet...

Any advise is appreciated, happy the youngster is really enjoying fishing!!!

Thanks!

I love fishing small ponds in the winter.  There are dozens of small farm ponds around me that are nearly all gems.  Do what slipperybob said, that should work and it's what I would do.  I hope your son has just as much fun as he is having now!

Have you guys ever tried dropping structure to actract them throught the ice?  Any suggestions?

They sell structure on a line. All you gotta do is drill a few holes and arrange the lines the way you want them. I have not personally tried them. They are a little to spendy for my liking, but i have tried to make my own. its worth a look.
