Boots which would you suggest?
« on: Nov 19, 2010, 04:53 PM »
I am thinking about getting another pair of boots for this winter / ice season.

Bata Extreme Cold Weather Mickey Mouse Boots
Wolverine Leather Cold Weather Military Boots
Belleville Cold Weather Military Boots with GorTex

Are either any good?

I am looking to keep my feet warm
I am looking for "water proof" boots

The one thing I would think about is how much walking you plan to do in them.  If you aren't walking much, the choices are much easier.  You can get a really, really warm boot that will keep you dry without any trouble at all.  But, if you plan on walking a lot, then the decision gets a little tougher. You will want something that isn't too bulky and gives you some ankle support.  For a non-walking boot, I'd recommend a LaCrosse Ice King.  I've also heard that those mickey mouse boots work well, but I've never owned a pair.  If you are walking alot, then I'd go with something like the Cabela's Inferno.  Really warm, but not a huge body on it and good ankle support.  Good cross over boot that will also keep you warm and dry.  I don't think there is any one boot that will do both well, you almost need to have a couple of pairs if you can swing it.  The more comfortable you are, the more you'll fish and you'll stay on the ice longer too.

Walking really depends on where I go so maybe I will bring two pairs or just wear a pair accordingly

Thanks

I think what holehopper said was good advice and taking two pairs would be a good idea.  I use the La Crosse Ice Kings as I have a  problem  with cold feet but they can make your  butt drag on long treks.

the white mickey mouse boots are the only boots i will were. ive taken my sock off filled the boot with water from the hole put my boot back on and within minutes you will pour out warm water,  but they are bulky.like anything else you get used to them.

I have never gotten cold in my Cabelas Inferno 2000 pac boots and my weakness is cold feet. They are waterproof and very comfortable. I can walk several miles a day on the ice with them and my feet never hurt. They are by far the lightest (weight wise) pac boots I have ever owned. They are very reasonably priced too.

I have a pair Sorels that I've always had good luck with but it seems that Sorels boot line-up isn't what it use to be. I bought a pair of Irish Setters Snow Claws (2010 Boot of the year) at the end of last season so they haven't gotten a full season of testing. I was concerned that they might be a tish warm since I really don't have cold feet issues but so far they've been fine and like the lace up boot style a little better than some of the pac boots offer. I'm thinking about trying a pair of LaCrosse or a pair of Baffins this year as well as it's getting time to retire the Sorels.

Thank you all

I might opt for a cheaper pair of boots the warmest for the best price.
I do have a habit to run to the tip ups which as times are spread out some what far.
The boots I have from last year are very light and besides moist feet from sweat (sometimes) they actually kept my feet dry even when walking through the puddle covered ice.

i bought a pair of alpha ice kings last yr. and i still freeze my feet even w/ a pair of heavyweight merino wool socks!. my 18yr. old, made in canada, sorels are warmer but almost shot. im gonna have to try the transalaskans from cabelas. hopefully they do the job. was dissappointed on how thin the ice kings liner was compared to the older style ice kings. at -20 only the best will keep your feet warm. my bro. has a pair of baffins and he swears by them. might check them out also.
