My Shanty TV (what TV do you use?
« on: Oct 07, 2010, 09:25 AM »
I had and old Sony that did not have the newer tuner and it was black and white. I started looking for a nice portable TV and most were cheaply made and the display models had knobs that were falling off. I found in my search that no name brand TV manufacture makes a small portable for a digital signal. I found a TV I liked at Radio Shack and when I went to my hometown dealer they had one but it was 175 bucks. I just saw one at a shopping mall across the state line for allot less. I walked out and went to the mall. When I got to the mall the TV was on sale for 99 bucks. I find a good deal once in awhile.

It has a digital tuner and an analog both. Wide screen view and is color. Has a place to hook regular cable to it and it will work with cable TV too.

I have an older CRT type TV with a built in DVD player in my shack. I have been thinking about getting one that is digital and an antenna, but I don't think I would have much for reception where I fish anyway. At least I can watch Grumpy Old Men at any time.

I should also note you have to have a satalite system as there really is no over the air reliable Tv   at least with analog tv you could sometimes get a snowy picture or at least the sound   now we have improved with digital :cookoo:   so we dont get crap !!!  :%$#!: :%$#!:

I hate the fading in and out. When it starts fading I can change back to analog and still get a constant signal. Analog only works on three channels in my area. All of the other stations have switched totally to digital. I do have 14 digital channels to try to pick up. Notice the word try!

I checked online for stations in the area where I fish and the closest tower is a bit over 30 miles away. I would probably have to put an antenna up on a mast to get anything. I guess DVDs are the way for me to go. Are any of you guys using a digital converter on the ice. My TV doesn't have a digital tuner and I don't want to put up with a converter box on the ice.

I have a 12v digital converter. I use it with my flat screen TV in the camper. Now that I have the small TV with the converter built in, I am using it in the house in an extra room.
If the closest station is 30 miles away it will seam farther in a snow storm. Go with the DVD player and buy your favorite series for out on the ice. I use the inverter for charging my camera battery and my cell phone in an emergency. They are charged up when I go, but long weekends on the ice it comes in handy.

One tip I can give you. When using a DVD player I use the battery that comes with it until it goes dead. Then I hook up to my 12 battery with a cigarette plug. At this point I take off the DVD battery so it is not charging and taking extra juice I could be using for something else. If you leave it plugged in, it will be using amps for charging, even if you are not watching a movie. I wait till I get back to my room to charge up the DVD pack.

I have an on board charger mounted in my drop down house to charge the batteries and my TV is 110v so if I'm watching TV, the generator is running and I'm charging batteries at the same time. I usually run the generator for a few hours in the evening and a couple more in the morning while I'm using the coffee maker. Even in my porty I can crank up the gen set and turn on the lights if I'm on the ice with my pickup.

I have a few TV's. The 6 inch one is powered by a hand crank and that's all it needs to last all day. Only get one channel... but at least it's crystal clear.

if you look at the store displays look for one that has a wall wart   9 out of 10 times its a 12 volt output  and you can make your own cord!   another plus is the flat screens use far less power so a small inverter can run it too

Just make sure it has the new digital tuner built in that way you won't need the extra converter box.

Mine is the 5' x 1 1/2' panoramic window I added over the summer.  Set at the perfect height to view while seated.  It's fun to watch all the action that happens on the ice.  Can't wait to use this house this year!
