place to go with my wheel house
« on: Sep 26, 2010, 10:50 PM »
A new winter is coming and need a place closer to take my wheel house. I have been going to Mille Lacs MIN from northern IL for the lase 3 years, a long ride with not much fish. The reason I liked Mille Lacs is they plow the roads and I can keep the house up at a resort all winter. Does any resorts in Wisconsin have plowed roads on the ice to drive on ? food and drink ? can keep at resort all winter ? and most of all have good fishing.
Thanks.

Hopefully some of the guys from around Green Bay or even down towards Lake Mendota will chime in here soon, I feel your pain in driving all the way up to the Dead Sea but I'd be worried about break ins any place I didn't know too much about.....

Your right about the break ins, lets drop the part about keeping at the resort. I do not mind hauling, this way I can try different places. Thanks

There are lakes in the Hayward area, Minocqua area, Tomahawk, Eagle River and of course Winnebago and the Madison Area.

I would pick a couple of areas, and then get info from the Chamber of Commerce for each town you want to try.
They would be able to give you the name / phone # of resorts in the area, as well as bait shops.
Make some phone calls and maybe even a road trip to check things out.

I would not keep my shack on the lake until I have been going there a couple of years.

Hope this helps,

I would think that Winnebago is your best bet being you're from Illinois.  It's about the closest lake that I know of where there is some consistency with plowed roads.  Other lakes further south are usually not plowed, at least not often.

Madison chain is out, you can't drive on those lakes.

Next closest?  Maybe Shawano?  I don't know much about the fishing on Shawano, but I know that there's a city of shacks out there every year.
