Any Pickers out there?
« on: Oct 14, 2010, 11:08 PM »
I have been watching that show American Pickers. Since watching it, I have had an eye out for things. I have picked a few great things so far. Last weekend, I was driving by a tag sale and saw some cast iron pans. I went to look at them and the lady wanted 10 bucks for the set. Score...
So far I have picked a few things.
cast iron pans 10.00, tackle box full of lures 15.00, antique creel 3.00, life jackets for the kids 1.00 for 2.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

I stopped at a garage sale the other day because I seen a set of old wooden snow shoes sitting out front. Looking more I found a old beat up set of wooden skis. Thought about picking up the shoes and skis for ice fishing (need skis to build a lift for my trap). At least that was until the old lady told me she wanted $75 for the skis and $85 for the shoes. A little out of my price range, especially considering their conditions.

Some people think the stuff they held on to for 50 years is worth money because it's old. Some of it is just junk. The show shoes might have been worth a few bucks, but the ski's were probably junk...

Everybody is somewhat a picker.
I saw a snowblower w/ a "FREE" sign by the side of the road. I doubled back only to see two guys pull over, and stop in traffic, like maniacs. I pull over and watch. One guy runs to the snowblower, the other guy can't get out fast enough, so his old lady hops out and races, w/ no lady-like grace I might add,  to the free snowblower. They both touch the snowblower at about the same time. Now the old man of the old lady is on the scene, she steps back and he takes over. Each man is pulling the machine this way and that and an argument ensues. About 3 minutes of watching this and I've had my amusement for the day. I also feel a bit nauseous that people can be that greedy. People are crazy for free stuff.

It's much more fun to take the cardboard "free" sign and leave the junk. Got a whole stack.

I would say well over half of my fishing stuff comes from auctions and yard sales. Auctions you have to be careful, Seems like some people get wrapped up and pay more than new. Acrawfor; Watch the St. Vinnies up your way. They always have snow ski's for cheap. I get them here in Republic for 5 bucks a set. Picked up 5 Beaver Dams at Marquette Vinnies for 4.34 each. Snowshoes usually sell reasonable at yard sale. Got a nice pair of magnesium military shoes for 40 bucks in Marquette yard sale. Better keep this stuff a secret or the American Picker will be up here pickin'.   Steve

Two or three summers ago a friend and I were driving and saw a canoe in the front yard of a garage sale.  We turned around as I was in the market, and the lady only wanted $150.  It was a brand new Pelican 15' canoe, used once.  Turns out they didn't like being in a canoe.  At the time it had about a $500 value.  I since sold it (for $300) and upgraded to a used 17' Wenonah Spirit II I picked up for $200!!  It's got a little wear but many years left.

I found a mint Frabill Shuttle with original windbreak at a yardsale for 40bucks.  The guy sais he was moving south, out of New York (go figure). When I opened the seat, he had 4 tipups a scoop, and a minnow bucket, he said it all goes for the price.  Loves the deals!
The Greenhornet's caught more fish then you've lied about, Gustafson!

I bought a 7 inch Lazer hand Auger for 6.00 at a yard sale.  Thinking of selling it, but I'm not sure.  I bought a vexilar off of craigslist one year for 75.00 and sold it 150.00.  I love the pickers!!!  If I could do it full time, I would, but I don't think it would pay the bills.   That's why I'm a teacher, summers off = more time to yard sale! :)
