With or without electronics I'll go 5 minutes per hole until I find active fish. Finding active fish needs to be your goal. Until then you need to keep moving.
Active fishermen find the active fish.

With out anything happening 3 min a hole jigging, 45 min. for a tip up... Unless I am being lazy and I try not to be. I do come back a re-fish holes.

I don't really have a time limit, just kinda go by what I feel. Usually when I'm starting in the morning, I drill a 6-10 holes spaced out. I won't fish a hole more than a minute or two if I'm not seeing anything, and if I see a few fish come through without biting, I keep moving. I'll drill another set of holes if I don't get any action within 15-20 minutes or so.

Thanks everyone for there replies. I ask this because generally once me and my buddies set our lines the beers start flowing  and we start to loose our "mobility" but we have a great time so that's all I can ask for

The same thing happens to my buddies and I lol, but all that matters is that you're having fun! I just recently picked up a jawjacker, its great for when you just wanna hang out and shoot the bull.

  • stay warm, safe and tight lines
We usually sit at a set of hole for about half the day if nothing really happening then we move. The most I have ever moved was 5 times in one day

Sometimes it seems like all day, I get too stubborn and say I'm not leaving till I get a fish out of this hole. Then the next day I say to my self "I should have gone out a little farther".

One of the best things about fishing, you can be passive or proactive! What ever is your style! That being said, if your goal is to catch fish, proactive is the way to go the vast majority of the time!

Look around If the whole area is loaded with folks getting Nadda Wait longer If you are alone in getting skunked land move. I fish a hole 20 min or so then drill one off in some direction at least 30 feet away. Deeper if i am moving out toward noon and back in after noon. If all else fails get in to shallow water close to end of light and wait for shallow afternoon  to evening fish.   My Issue is i just quit Smoking so the Two smokes and move rule is not going to help me anymore I need A cheap watch.

Depends on a few factors.  If I am fishing for perch I will move after about 20 minutes.  If I am fishing for something like trout or pike I will just sit there for hours.  I have a few reasons for this.  A) trout are constantly on the move so they will be thru eventually and B) I really dont care to catch those snot rocket some of beaches.....so I wont expend the energy to do so.

It depends.
How many holes do you drill to start off with?
Are you using tip-ups, jigging rods, or both?
If both, cut a few more holes than your trap limit, pull a trap and jig and move when YOU feel it's time.
I call that kind of jigging as going "old school" because it forces you to pay more attention to you line, to be wary of each and every bump, tap or movement of the line.

Personally I give it 1/2 to 1 hour before I decide to move.
In that time I will have changed lures a number of times to make sure I have given plenty of options to any possible fish down below.

I generally punch 6 holes my limit or 12 if I have a partner to start. Iam mostly a tip up fisherman but finally discoverd pk lures so I'm really interested in jigging more.  Iam deffiently going to put the "old school" method  to the test. Thanks Tim!
