It seems that ice fishing rods come in all lentghs, can you use a 28" in a shanty or should you go with something shorter?  Is that also to large for jigging?

It's all in what you like and what you can fit in your shanty..You can pretty much get any action in any length rod.

I think it all  is about what species of fish you are going for. Personally, for bigger fish I like a bigger rod that has more measured give so fish don't pop off as much... jmo
if anybody from michigan will help me out with the lakes and stuff up here I'd really appreciate it since I'm new to the area.

It's all peronal preference. I like long rods when I'm not in the shanty, short ones (24") in the shanty and if I'm sight fishing I like one about16".
There is nothing in the world I'd rather do than ice fish!

9 inch Marmish with ultra sensitive tip for water up to 30ft. When fishing deeper water for laketrout and burbot I like a 28 inch.

PS: My wife likes a 9 incher too

totally personal preference.  I personnaly feel the action/sensitivity of the jigging rod is more important than the length.  Then again, I don't use a shanty...so I am not restricted to a certain size.

I usually jig with the line held between my thumb and pointer finger (inside a hard shack), so length is irrelevent to me. After the fish is on, hook is set, then i reel with the rod. I choose a shorter rod (ugly stick ice) simply for ease of transport.

"I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, because I suspect that men are going along this way for the last time, and I  don't want to waste the trip; maybe one day I will catch a mermaid; and finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important, but because I suspect that so m

I like a 30" plus rod for trout to help absorb the shock of runs and cut down on slack line. Lake trout I like a 34" plus actually because I lose a lot of them because they tear free of the hooks. But if you play them too easy they will escape because of slack line. For panfish I like a shorter rod.

It's not the length of your rod,it's how you wiggle your worm. :o
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an  well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, A fishing pole in one hand, beer in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming \"WOO HOO, what a ride!

Valk - I try to go with as long of a rod as possible that's practical in a shanty. I try to fight fish with more rod than reel. The bigger and "feistier?" the fish, the more a longer limber rod comes into play. I prefer 5' - 5 1/2' rods when out on the open ice, but use the old short Swish-Rods for double haulin' perch inside a shanty. My inside the shanty walleye/pike/perch jiggin' rod is about 26".

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

i spend more time in the shanty....so my favorite is 23" and ultra light...i like the sensitivity due to the light biting northerns and walleye where i fish alot....suprisingly this rod has served me very well and hoisted the largest at 40"...i thought it was going to snap...my others are 24" and ultra light as well....room is the biggest thing to consider....Grump
