I can't believe the other vehicles are just sitting there.  I think I'd be getting off the ice ASAP.

He probably fell into a crack that opened up, the other trucks are probably sitting on 3 feet of good ice. I can understand why nobody wanted to try and hook on a chain or strap to the truck and get pulled down with it.

I found some more comments about this. I guess you were stupid if you were driving out there.

"when we first came to it only the front tires were in. when we got there they were in process of getting ropes hooked up to it and they made a hard run at it to get it out, it started up and out but when the rope snapped in went back down hard and sank it. I can only assume they tried to pull it out slow first but just kept slipping on the ice, it was bare ice with no traction so then they decided to try a hard run at it. Hats off to Wigwam resort for trying really really hard to help the guy out. I can only assume the guides up there have done this once or twice before and really know the best ways to try to get trucks out. It was amazing to watch first hand and reality check sets in that it could easily be your own truck. We were on wheelers but there were a lot of trucks out that far. The ice was 2.5-3ft thick but really crummy. you almost had to hold you auger back drilling holes."

"thats one of the other half dozen that were deep 6'd the past 3 days!!
Anybody counting??? what was that 1/2 dozen or so this weekend?"

"The best way to prevent this is to listen to people and understand the conditions. Everyone thought that because it was only March 20th that the ice was fine. We had a warm winter and lots of snow and the lake had on average about 10-12" less ice than normal."
The other thing to look for is that most of the pictures you see the vehicles have fallen through on an old road. There was probably water standing there at one time and ate away at the ice. When conditions get bad watch where you are driving."

4 Vehicles went down on Lake of the Woods last weekend, that was just one of them.  Most of the accesses are now closed to vehicles and the ice is going fast.

How long will the vehicles sit on the bottom polluting the lake before they can get to them? Ice-out??? How sad if that is the case. Seems to me that if there is any doubt at all as to the strength of the ice anywhere on the body of water, the access points should be closed.
