I finally iced some fish
« on: Dec 10, 2004, 08:07 PM »
I had to tell some one since I went fishing alone.  At the end of the day (on Big Lake) there were 3 fish in the hut.  A 10 inch rainbow, a 17 inch rainbow, and a 22 inch dolly.

Good job, i hope All the lake freeze here soon. Only some of the smaller, less productive, lakes are safe yet. The good small lakes and dynamite big lakes (big in kodiak terms anyway) are on the brink.

Icy Mike does anyone target dolly's or landlocked silvers up there or do they just target bows, lakers and pike. I target dollies and silvers all the time down here, especially silvers cuz they are like panfish to me, i won't catch anything over 18 inches but i can catch 50 plus good eatin fish in a day.

Big Lake is known to produce some good dollies so a lot of guys target them.  There is a 20 inch minimum length and only one per day.  There are a number of other lakes where the dollies have been stocked and reach some decent sizes (12-16 inches).  For the most part most guys seem to go after the land locked salmon and rainbows.  The salmon rarely go over 12 inches.  Burbot are also targeted in some of the lakes, not many though.  The lakers are a bit further north- I haven't tried for them yet.  There are a few road accessible pike lakes around but for most you need a snow machine which I don't have.

We're allowed 10 dollys a day, i usually fish buskin lake. I am perplexed at the size of your salmon cuz that lake is much bigger than the lake i fish for silver yet my lake produces a lot of 15 to 18 inchers. Predators perhaps?

I think it may be more the pressure on the lakes- or I'm a poor fisherman and only catch the little ones.  The other part may be that they release so many into the lakes the fish don't have enough to eat.  I don't know.

I try to keep humble about my abilities to fish.  That way my wife keeps allowing me to go out and 'practice' ;).  Myself and a buddy are going to try some nite fishing this Friday for burbot.  Set up the tip-ups, put on a pot of soup, and fry some burgers on the coleman stove.  Wait for the flags to pop and hope it's not too cold.  I still catch myself wanting to fish the way I did when I lived in Wisconsin, but things and fish are different up here.  Slowly I'm gaining on the learning curve.  Do you ever get up to the Anch/Valley area to fish?
