I needed more room
« on: Nov 26, 2010, 08:20 PM »
The number of guys who show up for our annual ice fishing trip continues to grow.  This year it looks like a total of 9 guys have committed already.  We have two portables and that's not going to cut it for late January fishing.  I just dropped some cash on a 6-man hub style from Glen's Outdoors.  Hopefully that will take care of our shelter problems for at least another year.  Anybody have anything good or bad to say about the hub shelters?  You can't beat the price from Glen's.

What about some tips?  I've never fished without a floor.  Do you guys put something on the ground like outdoor carpeting or something?

I have the little buddy and that is plenty for my 3-man portable.  Do I need to upgrade to a big buddy for the 6-man?

My kids had some interlocking foam pads that were roughly 2.5 ft x 2.5 ft and those worked perfect and VERY affordable

Who said you had to supply all the gear. With nine of you tell the buds to get off there backsides pull out the plastic and bring some gear. There should be a kitty to take care of the get together and you should help out only as much as they do.
Take a kid fishing, they make great pack mules.
Put the big ones back for another day eat the small ones.

do  what we do here in Ma and make it a week long event and rent a huge house. It usually costs a few hund per guy but is well worth it.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

Closed cell foam is the best floor material.  Light, warm and won't get wet. You might want 2 buddy heaters....one at each end.  That should take care of you just fine!

I borrowed a 6-man hub shelter from a buddy last year to accomodate a few extra anglers.  It's spacious and roomy for four, but you're going to be cramped with 6.  I liked the quick up-and-down process, amost as fast as a flip-over shed!

I hear they can be a real pain if it is windy.

You may need to make this a "warming shack" and base of operations instead of a fishing shack.

I would get the Big Buddy heater with a #20 lb tank, that should be enough to keep you guys warm.

Hope this helps,

Wiener
