Spawn on tipups
« on: Jan 25, 2010, 09:24 AM »
Do any of you use spawn sacs on your tip ups ?

If so, tell me your favorite set up.

Do you fish on the bottom, do you have any blades or anything to provide movement ?

Thanks,

Wiener

No, I have not tried spawn bags for a number of reasons like obtaining eggs. However I have caught trout both brown and rainbows on the Gulph Salmon eggs. I put two on a size 8 octopus hook and fish them off a tip up or a dead stick. I feel the Gulph eggs stay on the hook better than the real eggs. Gulph also has spawn sacks which I have not tried.

Oh ya, fish them on #10 circle hook. I put them either right below the ice or about 3 inches off the bottom. I have never had luck fishing clusters in the middle of the water column. I can not say Top or Bottom is better because they both produce the same.

Depending on the size of the fish where you are going depends on the size of clusters you want to use. here in NH I like having sacks that hold 3-5 eggs in them, no more than 5 eggs. I like them smaller around here. This is one bait I would say that smaller is better.

Also try mixing your eggs in the sack, different colored eggs can work very well. I go after bows, browns and brookies with sacks. Never got a laker on one either.

Good luck

I use spawn sacs but usually not on tip ups. Way to many hit and runs for me to bother. Another reason is its just to much fun to get em on the rod. What a blast. As to where? Im usually in 10 fow or less and this is a marina. Ive caught them at all depths. Doesnt seem to be a rhyme or reason. If their in their, their in their. Tight lines guys and have a great season.

No I use either small shiners or meal worms. The meal worms work great in about 3fow.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!
