Wabamun trout
« on: Feb 22, 2010, 11:44 AM »
went to wabamun on friday just past the bridge and saw a trout of some kind on the fish t.v.
now before you ask it was not a whitefish, jack or walleye. nor was it a sucker. ive seen all of these on the cam so far, but have never seen a trout of anykind. ive heard of pike at hasse, (from F&G), but a trout at wabamun??? if i hadnt seen it i wouldnt believe it, but just wondering if there's a stream feeding it, or if someone actually took the time to try and illegally stock the lake with trout? both seem very unlikely to me

I heard the same thing about Slave lake . Fished slave quite a few times but never seen a trout. As for wab I imagine someone threw a bunch in there for some reason. Just my opinion.

I doubt if it was any kind of trout, cant see any surviving in there, lakers like cold deep water and all others would get eaten by the monster pike. There perty colors would attract a pike for sure. Hmmmm nice big shinner, they would say. LOL  Is there any other species that look similar to a trout?

If it was it wont last long in there.
Gonna get me a 16" Perch this year.

thnx, but after 17 years of fishing and using a cam for the last 3 i think i know a trout when i see one. and no it wasnt a laker, looked like a rainbow. unless it was an extremely small laker which i doubt would've survived the trip there in a bucket

How many of those 17 years did you make your heart fond with absinth?  I mean considering what it did for Van Gough, a muskrat could look like a trout ;D

Just sayin' :)

Until this year, I have scuba'd Wab for years (at least 20 for sure, as I used to teach it here), and have never seen trout of any kind. This is not to say someone did not drop some in the lake, as anything is possible. Being a 'slow swimmer' rainbows are easy prey for pike and walleye, which is why they don't seem to do well together, unless in VERY large lakes. As others have mentioned, I doubt there are many, and what you saw probably will not survive long in that lake with the big Gators that are in there.

It was probably transplanted by someone from The Bucket Brigade. It really is pointless and stupid to do this. Good time to point out that most stocked trout are sterile - for good reason. What it may accomplish is infection of the native species.

just throwing this out as a very very highly unlikely but just maybe, just maybe type of idea.

weren't they at one time feeding water from the North Sask into Wab to up the levels? There are rumours of Bulls starting to appear downstream of Devon, so maybe just maybe a bull fry could of somehow slipped past and ended up in Wab. don't know if they actually did transfer water or it was just something they were thinking of doing. i would think that of all the trout species (and yes i know a Bull is not a true trout species but a char) the Bull would probably have the best fighting chance of surviving in a lake with Jack and when young they have par marks like a rainbow juvenile.

but i would think that if it was a trout, it was probably "transplanted" from East Pit to Wab.

just my 2 cents worth

Rgds

I agree with the "transplant" theory, but I would not doubt anything about Wab (Including green men fishing out of the back of UFO  ;D).  I'm from the Yukon where all species of fish coexist in harmony (somewhat, but try to eat each other  ;)) & just hope to one day see predators & char in the same body of water in Albert (will never HAPPEN)...

This reminds me of three years back I posted seeing a school of walleye go by the dock at Wab & I had about a dozen Iceshaty posters calling me either a liar or saying I did not know a walleye from a hole in the head & now it's quite common to catch them at Wab.

I won't call anyone a liar on this board unless they're sending people on wild goose chases to lakes with no fish in them.  If Filthy said he saw a trout, he saw a trout...

hey Koffekat, how glad you mentioned something about Walleye! although it was a few years ago and i was quite a bit younger, i also have seen schools of walleye in Wabamun.  There is no getting past that big white spot on the tail.

Cool, Hopefully they continue there, and with 0 limits this lake could truly become the best fishing lake in alberta in 5 or 10 years.
Gonna get me a 16" Perch this year.
