I'm using one that I un-retired last year which was on one of my earlier boats (still use it in my canoe). I took an old cross-framed tip-up, took one arm off it and attached the transducer to the bottom where the reel was. Then I drilled more holes up the vertical shaft to be able to set the remaining cross-arm so the transducer is just under the ice no matter how thick the ice gets, up to about 1 foot. After that, it sits in the hole not tucked to one side.

I put it on max scroll speed, fish ID on 3 sizes, and sensitivity all the way up. It does not mark small jigs but a large spoon or  (#5) Swedish Pimple with piece of bait, it does. Fish on the bottom look like clutter. When a fish rises to the bait, it marks it as a fish. But you do not see the bait and fish 'become one' when you get a strike like using a flasher. The Power Sonic battery was purchased online and is identical to the flasher sized batteries which actually are designed originally for (hallways etc) emergency power-outages.

Is a flasher or Lowrance better? Yes. But it is also better than nothing because it will see suspended fish to let you know how deep to put your presentation.

My transducer is for a Lowrance however. I don't know where the original 'ducer went. Not on my boat because that has an Eagle fish finder. It is definitely a stop gap for me until I can buy a better system.

We have a Wide Eye that we use on the ice.   Had a spare mount so we took an old plastic jumper cable box and mounted the base mount inside and got a 12v motorcycle battery and mounted a suction cup to the transducer and we use this when ever we want a fish finder if we don't take our big boat, which has its  own fish finders.   Two winters ago we decided to try it on the ice and it works for what we want.   Tells us the depth and shows if there are any fish and what depths they are at.   If you have no snow on the ice and it is smooth you can drill a hole and then put some water on top of the ice and place the transducer in it and it works the same as if you were mounting the transducer inside the boat on the bottom of the hull or you can partially drill a hole place the transducer in it and take water out of the hole you drilled to fish out of and put it in with the transducer.

As long as you get a good seal between the bottom of the transducer and the ice surface it dosen't matter whether it is clear or melted down slush refroze on top of the clear ice it will work.   Now if it is a foot or so of snow that is not melted clear to slush and refroze to ice you might have to drill though it into the clear ice and clean the hole out and place the transducer in the hole and add water and then it will work.

This is how I rigged my transducer for my Hummingbird LCR Portable.

Shooting through the ice is OK for finding depth but is not as good as getting the transducer below the ice for actually fishing. If the ice is full of air bubbles forget shooting through the ice.

I don't have a problem getting it to work on ice with air bubbles unless there is actually no solid ice to it.

i tried it on the ice n it worked pretty good i need to go make a float on my xtra transducer n try that too.
