howmany use the baitcast style reel for jigging
« on: Oct 29, 2004, 04:52 PM »
i tried one a few yrs ago and love it.  line goes straight down the hole...no memory.  anyone that has tried one of my poles loves them. they only go for about 10-12 bucks.  there are more expensive ones with level wind but i find i don't need that for my application, mainly pan fish.

I've use a Shimano  Curada  200, only because I have a few.  Really work's good, but a little heavy.  I tryed the little Wally Mitchell's ( They are purer junk). >:( I think they broke the second time out. I was looking at a ST reel today, I know there cheep but there nice an lite, I coulden find just the reel so I passed on it.  The way I sit when I'm jiggen the spinning is in my way, it's alway's bumping my leg, so I hardly ever use a spinning reel.  I you use a baitcaster reel make sure you fill the reel with line, you'll less coil's in you line that way.
Always keep your line wet!

I use them on my lake trout poles. We usually are fishing in a hundred plus feet of water. I like them when the water is that deep.
Spinners on all of my other stuff though.

I used to use them for lake trout jigging. They are nice because it takes away the coils that can form with spinning reels. However the line does drop down the hole much slower and the roller line guide that picks up the line in the reel can freeze quite easily. Plus they can be heavy and cumbersome on a jig rod. It is for this reason I stick with a spinning reel. But casting reels do work well for ice fishing, especially with heavier line (10 plus pound) and bigger jigging sticks. So it's all a matter of preference, because both work well and both have advantages and disadvantages.
Wyoming Ice, you fish in over 100 feet of water for mackinaw? :o :o. Man that is deep, even for a guy like me who advocates deeper, bottom oriented fishing for mackinaw. I usually fish 30 - 50 feet. Tell me how you do at this depth and do you catch bigger macks?

Mackdaddy,
we fish flaming gorge res. in southwestern wyo/northern ut.  It is very deep and a lot of times that is where we find the lakers. The ice can be iffy a lot of years and the wind can be terrible.Huge lake trout in these waters though.
Check it out,it can be a hot spot when the ice is good.

I have two rods setup just for jigging lakers or anything of size and both have Shimmano Bantam baitcasting reels on them and I have used them since they were first built . Must be close to ten years now and still loving them .

Yeah wyoming ice, I have been by flaming gorge reservoir many times but have never stopped to fish it. It is probably a short enough drive from GJ to where I should be fishing it some. I know it has huge macks, nice browns and 'bows, and tons of nice smallmouth bass, even some catfish. I fish Blue Mesa though in central Colorado and it is similiar in size and type of reservoir to Flaming Gorge Reservoir. I usually fish in 30 - 50 feet. However because I misread my vexilar once and mistook a stationary mark for the bottom, I was fishing in about 80 feet of water at Taylor Reservoir. We landed two small macks, and my brother lost a big one, and then had something smash his jig. But since lake trout around here barely even tap the jig when they hit, and that it was shredded when it came up, we think that one was a pike.

Mackdaddy,
It is very difficult to "feel" a bite at those depths. While jigging, if ANYTHING feels different, set the hook.It is a different feel in deep water. We use at least a 1/2 ounce tube (I prefer 3/4) jigs with a big slab of sucker meat. I use 12lb. test Maxama line. Like I said before, any different feel, try to rip his lips off. There's a lot of stretch in line that deep. A lot of guys don't use huts because they feel that they can't get a good hook set in a hut.
On our second pole, we use an 8 to 10 inch whole sucker and put him on the bottom and let him set.(leave the bail open and let them take it).
It's well worth getting to know the gorge. We stay at Manila,Ut.and usually go there for the weekend.
You can do a search and see that there are some really Big fish there (Mack record 51lbs.8 ozs.)The folks at Buckboard Marina are very helpful when looking for ice conditions and fishing reports.
It is fairly close to GJ and can be a real hoot hooking up with a 25 lb.mack in a
120fow.
Hope this helps and maybe if we make a run down there this year, we can hook up.
