New Ground...
« on: Jan 27, 2010, 12:52 PM »
Hey guys, Im looking to explore some new ground!  I am mainly a CT fisherman but am trying to plan a trip somewhere in the Northeast for the first week of March.  I would primarily like to try for Walleye, Trout, Salmon, Crappie, Big Perch; Second: Pike, Muskie, Bass.  I know this is a wide range of fish.  I was wondering if anyone on here could give me some feedback on trips they may have taken and maybe make suggestions as to a destination I may want to consider.  Interested in VT, NY, NH, ME.
Thanks...

Go to the adirondacks, within 30 minutes from most motels, you have a choice of all of the fish mentioned above  ;) pm me if you'd like some more info.  Walleye, pike and muskie close at the beginning of march,  I want to say march 15, but I may be confusing that with the opener.  There are LOTS of rules up there when it starts to get that late in the ice season, but plenty of great fishing.  I'm pretty sure I'll be living up there for the first two weeks of march.

You really can't go wrong with champlain. You can catch everthing there. Mallets bay near the sandbar is a good place to start.you can use 15 tilts per man on champ. Good luck.

Thanks for everything guys! You've been more then helpful. A friend convinced me to give Onieda a try. Anyone been over there? Heard there's some big eyes to be caught!

if your going to try oneida be extra careful ice can be shifting up there esp out over the open lake. the bays are usually ok be still be extra cautious. public access to oneida can be difficult to find sometimes as many who fish that lake have access from private camps. put in your time and you may be rewarded w/ a very large eye. i would consider a guide for your 1st time up there. getting info from the locals may be touchy esp if your from out of state. i fished oneida about the 1st of the year and we hit some nice perch and but no eyes.  if you going that far up you may want to try delta lake its up in rome, many species of fish there and a bit safer than oneida imo. or try just about any lake in the adks. good luck if you decide to go.

Thanks ctjim, we actually rented a private camp for a long weekend on the south east side of the lake. I spoke to them last night about the ice and they said its great right now. Im keeping my fingers crossed. Has anyone fished down that way?

If you try Onida Lake talk with SNAGGER on the NY onida lake page He owns a lodge on the Salmon river in Altmar Ny and this time of year he fishes Onida Lake every day His information is solid and if the conditions arent good he'll tell you, he gets allot of walleye there!
