They're still huge at cascade
« on: Jan 25, 2010, 09:53 PM »
Went to Cascade today, 1st perch through the ice was an even 14" and 1.56lbs. I had Tackle Tom weigh and measure it. Biggest one I ever caught. Less than a minute later pulled a 13 1/2" out of same hole thought I was going to have that "whopper" day I've been hoping for. But alas, twas not to be. Came home w/ those and two more, one 12 1/2 and one 11. May not go again until the Cascade cup Ice Derby. Still a great day nonetheless.  ;D

I am headed to Cascade on Wednesday for the first time this year. HOW'S the fishing ?? Herd you can catch perch there ! Anybody have an area (not asking for your favorite spot) you should try ? It looks like it's a BIG lake ! Can I use a snowmobile (ice thick enough) ? What is the HOT bait ?

Thanks for any info, I sure Appreciate it.

Hey River, bait suggestions will be varied to each anglers choice. I have been doing best on red, red &yellow and chartruese ice flys loaded with crawlers. I have tried cut but and swedish pimples but seem to do the best on the flies size #8 or #10. I have had the best luck in 28' to 32' of water and some kind of structure if u can find it. I had my ford expedition on the ice 3 weeks ago with no probs. Not ready to do it again just yet but atvs and snowmobiles aren't having any problems. I have been making a new style pole holder for ice fishing and there are some at Tackle Tom's in Cascade. He was really impressed w/ the way I told him how easy they are to use and detect the lightest bites.

WoW !  Friendly People !     Wish my Duck hunting forum was.

Do you guys drive around thru Donnelly or can you go in above Cascade ? The roads to the park plowed ?

I will be coming up 55 so I will stop by Tom's to check out your "Rod Holders". I usually try not to buy tackle. Just the stuff I can't live without !
So I just got a BIGGER SHOP to put it ALL in!

Can't find my Regs:  with a 2 pole license can you fish with a pole & 6 tip ups or ?

Thanks
Good Fishing

lake access around shoreline drive is available with turnouts plowed by IDT. access to sugarloaf is limited to 4x4 and can be blocked at times by drifting snow. IDT does not plow the road in(or out).
the regs state ice fishing in Idaho, otherthan Bear Lake, is limited to 5(five) lines, period. and, not sure what time TT opens but i know they are always closed when i go up in the mornings and are closed on the way back down. if you need bait, stop in at Howdy's. they open at 0600.
i am headed up thursday and friday. looking forward to your report.

Hey River, let me know if you got a chance to stop by TT's. I really looking for some input on those rod holders. Seem to be "catching" on. Howard's in Nampa wants 1/2 dozen when I get 'em made. should be in his shop by sat. afternoon. Good luck fishing.

I'm going to have six new holders at Howard's this weekend. They are made of stainless rod and are stackable to conserve room in your sled. Let's put it this way, monday I had easily detectable bites from perch as small as 4". Everyone that has seen 'em so far is blown away by how easy they make bite detection and hook setting.

We (3 of us) went to Cascade on Thrusday, Got STUCK in the parking lot at Sugarloaf first thing !
Meet with a couple of local anglers and decided to party fish. 1 group fished the east side of the island, another went the west / middle and we went to the west front of the island. We caught 18 perch in 32' of water after starting in 9'. The fish ranged from 8" to 14".  A lot of fish on the bottum but VERY FINICKY we had to work them very hard to get them to eat. Single hook, splitshot & wax worm put the most fish on the ice but a kastmaster with a crawler attracted the most fish off the bottum but they were just looking. The 1st group moved out to the front of the island and caught a few perch and some nice trout, fishing with tip-ups. the 2nd group had 5 tip-ups and 1 perch.

I think if you work them with the help of the Marcum Flasher is the way we had our most luck! It won't be long until they start to get real Aggressive.

Very slushy make sure you have tall waterproof boots !!

Icehogger;  we were so cranked up we forgot to stop by TT to check out your "pole holders", maybe see them at Howards.
Good Fishing

Hey Dave sounds like a good day of fishing 'cept for getting stuck. Went to poison creek on other side of lake today w/ my 11 yr old daughter (she's as much a fishing nut as her dad, lol). I let another angler try one of the pole holders. He and his partner were really impressed w/ the system as a whole. However, he didn't get a bite on that pole. My daughter really dug using one of the holders. There was no doubt in her mind when it was time to set the hook. She caught the two biggest of the 14 we brought home. Sizes between 9 and 11. If anyone heads up to cascade and stops at Tackle Tom's to check out these pole holders you may need to mention them specifically, he hadn't put 'em out yet. I think he's saving them for some of his regular customers.
