They are actually a sculpin. I would have to see the picture but there are different kinds of sculpins in our lakes. Chances are it is either a prickly sculpin or a slimy sculpin. You can also find them in our streams.

HaHa I've been catching those for years and i always just assumed they were little burbs. I caught one last year at coo coo in about 60 feet of water and it was jsut sucking on my bait all the way up to the top. Are these a course fish that burbots would eat??

Sculpin are devoured by trout throughout the year, so i would have to say that a burbot would have a hard time passing one of these up. 4 inch sculpin is an ok size but you can find them to well over 6 inches.

yeah we always catch a ton of sculpins when we electrofish streams and lakes. Some can get pretty big. We also use to catch them in the bay of fundy and some of those got to be close to 2 lbs. a pretty neat fish and they are a blast in the aquarium. They feed on macroinvertebrates, eggs, small fry... that kind of stuff

Yeah that is a slimy sculpin. They can be distinguished by the first dorsal fin. A prickly sculpin will have a black marking on the rear of the first dorsal fin. The slimy sculpin won't have any black.

Im pretty sure that there salt water sub species of these creepy looking little fish :P. I worked on the island all summer and @ low tide there were fish that look very similar to these in tide pools.

Do they last in an aquarium?. What size do they normally mature @?.

yeah there are a few different species that you can find in the saltwater and a tide pool is always a good place to find them.

they are pretty hardy fish and easy to keep. size of maturity all depends where you get them from. some streams or lakes have bigger fish. the colder the lake or stream, the slower they grow and reach maturity. the same goes for food availability.

We always catch lots of different species of sculpins when we go ocean fishing, we caught one about 7 pounds once, i was amazed, it was bright green.. I believe it was a green irish lord, althought the red ones are a lot more common

Yes, I have caught most of those, but by far I think the most interesting fish is the rat fish. Have yo seen one of those?
